It’s down to personal preference, like the naming. Mine only have one name that may be shortened or I call them beautiful/handsome. Although Zac can’t really be shortened!
 
I have Pepper who I sometimes call Peppercorn.

And Pebble who I sometimes call Pebblekins.

🤣

You can call them what you want. But as said above the vets might get confused.
 
I have always had more than one name for my piggies.
I'll start with my Rainbow Piggie's names.

They were/are registered at the vet by their single names only (Betsy, Velvet, Dennis, Christian, Meg, Patsy, Lexi, Thea, Bramble and Misty) cos otherwise it can be a bit of a mouthful for the Vet/Receptionist!

I didn't think when I named Brillo that it's a bit of a tongue twister with my surname. More than one vet has been tripped up on that one.
I do this weird thing where the long names get shortened and the short names get lengthened. Red is Redlie, Brillo is Brilly, Freddie is Fred, Timmy is Timothy and Bertie is Bertie Bert Berts! Mine all have the last name of Pigglington except at the vet when it's changed to my surname. Call them what you like, it doesn't even have to be polite, during the impossible quest to find Bertie a cage mate he has become bl...y Bertie, a name with his difficult character I suspect is going to stick.
 
I have more than one name for my piggies

Elizabeth - Lizzy Beth
Ella - Ella Bella Boo Boo
Esme - Mee Mee

But at the vets they’re just registered with their first name and my last name so not to confuse the vets and receptionists 🤪 but it’s all down to personal preference and you can call them what you like 😊
 
Been thinking about this more, we had a parakeet named Baby and that is what his first name was registered as at the vet. His nickname ended up being Naked as well....the name speaks for itself. He went in to the vet many times till the vet said that he was naked because it was something neurological that was causing his plucking; we tried everything to get him to stop!
 
A good long name will raise a smile in the vet waiting room. I have been responsible for the vet calling out 'Fifi Fluffybottom' in the waiting room.
Now I have three in the Piggy Palace, the two new girls also had to have long names, they have to keep up with Fifi after all! So if they go to the vet they will be called out either as Pippa Shortstocking or Lady Penelope.
 
My piggies all have the same surname but it's not used outside the house. At the vet, they have just got one name and my surname.
And some of them have got names that I never really use. Tessy is officially Tess, Vicky is Victoria ...
Of course there are quite a few pet names that I use as well.
 
Mine have them... with our first pair, my kids just chose to give them middle names unprompted. Since then we've basically been handing the middle names down as a tribute to pigs gone by.

We've had: Frenzy Popcorn, Linney Cupcake, Hadley Cupcake, and Tomie Cupcake-Popcorn (we realized a few pigs in that we never handed our pig Frenzy's middle name down, so now our original pair of pigs are represented by the hyphenated middle name that will get passed down.)
Then, along the second 'line of descent,' we've had Sundae Vanilla, Leela Vanilla, and now Misa Vanilla.

One of my daughters also gives every hamster a middle name that is the first name of the preceding hamster, so we have had Eevee, Gwyn Eevee, Tiabeanie Gwyn, and Yuffie Tiabeanie.

The secret is you just give the vet the easiest possible version of the name! So we never bothered mentioning the middle names and our hamsters Tiabeanie and Carmen Sandiego just got shortened to Bean and Carmen for expediency!
 
I just sort of presumed the piggies would have the same surname as us as they're part of our family but I never really thought about it that much
