DO NOT USE ESSENTIAL OIL PRODUCTS ON OR AROUND CATS - THEY CAN BE FATAL.

Darky

That is what I just read on the Gorgeous Guineas website.

Now I am freaking out a bit.

I couldn't find the cat shampoo and we ran out of baby shampoo so my Mother said to use the Lemon, Tea Tree & Lavender conditioning guinea pig shampoo. I figured, well hey, if it's for piggies, it's probably just a lot milder.

My 4-5 month old cat is very well behaved when it comes to bathing so all was normal. I rinsed him very well (I always do - I'm always paranoid of any shampoo being left in the fur.)

I dried him well, then brushed and combed him. Now he's having a clean and snacking on biscuits.

Then I stumbled across that statement on the Gorgeous Guineas website.

...Poo.

Does anyone know why it's fatal, so if anything goes wrong, I'll know what to expect?

He's totally fine, acting normally. I'm hoping that because I rinsed him very well and didn't leave it in or anything (just in fur, rubrubrub, rinse.) he'll be fine.

Can someone please ease my fears? D:

I am truly an idiot. If anything happens, I will never be able to forgive myself.

some essential oils can be harmful to women when pregnant so they obv have a strong effect, maybe its if they are rubbed on and left on to soak in perhaps? if you little kitty is being normal he sounds like he will prob be ok.. surely you would notice signs in an hour if it were to be poisonus or anything to them?

hope someone else can help more than me, hope your kitty is ok :-*

Also, as always when I bathe a cat - no shampoo (nor water for the most part) went anywhere near his face/ears/genitals/anus/etc.

Thanks, Spudnik. :-\

sorry i didnt mean to worry you anymore than you are, i'll have a google and see if i cant find anything helpful

Oh don't worry, you didn't.

I'm just keeping a close eye on him, as he's on the floor next to me having a wash at the moment. He's laying down cleaning his paws, looking content enough.

Now he's trying to stalk and hunt a housefly, so definitely nothing abnormal going on. :D

Thank you. <3

Because this was just a one-off and pretty short exposure, I think he'll be fine, but I'll still be keeping a close eye on him and not let him outside for a while. (Probably not until tomorrow, seeing as it's now 6:30 and I don't let him out at night due to his age and size)
