hi yet another post from me! ::) ;D Not an emergency though! ;D
Well Bluebell, my sow seems to have a dirty behind. It's not round her actual bottom, thats really clean it's sort of over her behind.
I was just wondering what it could be? Could it be her grease gland? I thought it was only boys that had a problem with that? ?
She's perfectly healthy, and bright etc, so i don't think it's anything worrying, just wanted to know ? I'm bathing her and her mates on Sunday so if it the grease gland, i can deal with it like i would bertie? ?
Thanks,
Izzy x :)

with that gland on boars i dont see what people comment on it for as all of my boars just have a tiny dark bit where i think it is ?
why do people say it gets dirty or what not ?

Anyway ::) ;D I dont no if sows have them or not but it may be just that has long hair and needs a bath maybe ?

Sometimes boars will oversecrete and get a black waxy, smelly coating round the caudal gland. It needs to be removed with Swarfega.

Not all boars get this problem,it is not all that common.

Oh right as ive never had a problem with this and want to know what its like :P cause then ill get experience of it :D

oh what can it be? i thought it was only boys :-\ as soon as a bath her, within a few days it's back again :-\ they get cleaned out every other day, so don't think that she's sitting in dirt :-\

Can you be more precise. What is the "dirt"like?,is it greasy or waxy>,how big is the area?.

it's kinda wet and greasy :-\ and it covers most of her the area where the spine ends and the back legs are, it's a big patch. i can take a picture tomorrow, if that would help sorry ::)

Does she have long hair ? :) It may be that it just needs trimming O0

Just looked through your posts and found a piccie of her and she does have long hair ;) You can tel whether a piggie has long or short hair very easily

My sow Lady has this problem and shes a peru and all i do is bath her every now and again and always cut her hair short 0:)

Gee Cavy, I've never heard of this, but I'm following it just in case it ever happens to Ricky! I hope it turns out to be absolutely nothing! Have you asked the vet? Is that Bluebell in your picture on your posts? That is a beautiful little guinea! Very pretty color! Let us know if you find out what it is. I'm very curious myself! Love to little Bluebell! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

umm are you sure it's not bertie? he's definitely got long hair O0 hers is slightly longer than a normal english crested (she's half coronet, half smoothaired) and quite a bit thicker O0

Ok, so just got some pics of Bluebell :smitten:

? ? ? ? Her hair is longer than the average english crested, as she's a coronet x, but i don't think there's much there to cut :-\ The skin doesn't look sore underneath and she doesn't seem bothered by it :-\ It does bother me though! :-\ With Bertie, who is longhaired, definitely (Bluebells brother, he has more coronet in him), I cut round his bum and bath him sometimes, and that keeps him clean, but i don't think this is just dirt, it doesn't smell whiffy like dirt :-\

Oh yeah LOL! 98) sorry :embarassed: well yeah, i always put clean bedding down on the toilety bits every day, and then they get cleaned every other day ;) I'll see if i'm putting fresh stuff on absoloutly everywhere O0 and

actually, i think we'll try and get the cage clean every day and see if that helps O0

Good Luck as with my Long haired piggy lady it just looks exactly the same as what she gets :) I know where she pees and she sits in it all the time the dirty bum ;D Hope it gets solved out ::) Is her sister the same as her ? Has she got the wet bum ? ?

she hasn't got a sister ;D ? she has a brother, he's longhaired and he gets dirty , but when he's had his hair cut it isn't as bad O0
her mum's just plain shorthaired and doesn't get it, i don't know LOL ::) But we'll try the cage getting cleaned every day and see how it goes from there O0

am also going to change their bedding. They're on newspaper with chopped hay on top and it just doesn't absorb enough, i'm going to try out megazorb O0

I would chop all that long haired bit on her bum off! *should have been a hairdresser* ;D I think she's just weeing on herself/sitting in it.

Does anyone have a picture of a clean grease gland on a boar?

nah, my bertie doesn't get it, i still give him a clean round there though O0 well i'll try and chop off what i can, but i don't think there's much there to chop off! ;D

This is not caudal gland wax, that is only in small patches and looks like tar.It also has a distictive smell. This looks like urine stain and her pads look a bit red as well. Are you sure she does not have a uti?

Some long haired sows do tend to get wet round the backside and I keep my longhaired girls shorn at the back.To prevent urine scold of the pads, wash in clear water onc e a day, then apply a nappy rash cream or any barrier cream.Try and get one without parabens etc.

she hasn't been squealing when weeing or anything :-\
yeah i thought her pads look ree :( ok will do O0 i shall try and trim her too O0 and will be changing the bedding to megazorb and cleaning every day, so we'll see how we go from there O0 thanks :smitten:

the other thing is mary, she's had this on and of for quite a while, just didin't come back so quickly before, so i don't think it can be a uri, otherwise she's be in a bad state O0 i will wash her feet and will clean every day and change to megazorb O0 would GG perfect paws be good instead of the nappy rash cream? bless her will do all i can for her, love her so much :-*
