Hi everyone, sorry this is so long. To begin with the whole situation is made worse by myself having serious health issues. The stress and physical care I'm having to provide is making my own health worse. I'm housebound and cant even visit the vet with them, its my mum that is doing vet trips. Anyway,

I have a piggy diagnosed 2 years ago with CBS. She has always been my favourite girl. We were really saddened at time of diagnosis and vet obviously couldnt give any timelines but for the most part until last year she didnt show any signs of suffering, she never had a head tilt/movement or balance issues etc. She sometimes had a bad eye and had a URI or UTI come every few months because she just seemed more fragile and susceptible but in general was doing well. She was 1kg in her prime but the latter half of last year went to a new set weight of low to mid 900s, now when she is barely holding it together she can hit 900 but is mainly in the mid to late 800s. She has been making crackly breathing noises on and off since Christmas, she had a course of antibiotics last month but the sounds didnt go away. She went downhill badly last week despite it being only a couple weeks since her last antibiotics course (totally off food, just hiding in her bed), so was put on another two week course. Once they kicked in she seemed to perk up a bit and eats some pellets, salad and grass although not really any hay. She was just about maintaining her weight with this.

I wasnt happy with her just barely holding it together, I felt she was still not heading to a good place. Yesterday her friend had to go for an emergency dental (discovered she had spurs, ulcers etc bless her) and I decided to let her accompany her scared friend which I regret now..thought she could stay in the carrier waiting for her friend but the vets got her out to look at her and even trimmed her nails which would have really stressed her out and she was already so vulnerable. She spent the rest of the day and night in bed, making her crackly breathing sounds again, only eating one or two pellets and some salad and grass although she was happy to take some syringed critical care. Today she is much the same. Had 6mls critical care before refusing, a couple of pellets and went to lay on her heat pad again.

Ive felt shes been going on a downward spiral this year with brief periods of being herself. But more and more she is just sleeping and hiding away and less interested in food. The vet said the antibiotics could be putting her off but she was fine on them before and she was already like this before this course so I personally think its unrelated and it's just her going downhill..

Her friend is not eating hay yet after her dental but is able to eat pellets again and seeminly veg and grass. Her incisors had to be trimmed but hopefully they grow back quickly and she still seems like herself and happy to fight on. I'm also having to give her critical care as often as I am able (like i said now nursing two pigs and giving eye drops to another is a lot for my own failing health).

does anyone have any words of wisdom, support or advice? as the days continue with her like this I have obviously been thinking about when is right to call it quits as she is really not herself and I dont see her returning..If we manage to bring her to the end of the antibiotic course this coming Thursday I fear she will get even worse as the antibiotics seem to be all thats holding her together. Our and the vets idea is that her CBS has progressed and is out of control now. She isnt on pain meds (getting any out of the vets is super hard here) but when she was tried last week it made no difference to her so either her issues arent directly pain related or her pain is so bad the meds didnt touch it (in which case if i knew that i would certainly want to end her suffering).

Ugh I forgot to say last month she also had minor surgery to remove a sebaceous cyst. She was already on a downward spiral before this but I guess it wouldnt have helped 😞

I'm afraid I have no advice but I will bump your post.
Thank you. She is still very unwell 😞 this afternoon didnt want any critical care..ate a small amount of grass slowly. Staying in bed. I'm going to try to speak to her vet tomorrow and bring up the subject of euthanasia and she what she says..I just dont want her going on like this she has no QOL now.

A Practical and Sensitive Guide to Dying, Terminal Illness and Euthanasia in Guinea Pigs

I am so sorry you are going through this. I have linked a guide I hope you will find helpful to your situation.
Thank you. I have read it a couple of times now. Its hard being in these somewhat grey areas.. with CBS they still dont know really anything about it so it cant be talked about as definitively as something like cancer for example. Her eyes are weepy today now too..I wonder if its some kind of pneumonia she has developed. Thank you again 🙏

If you make the hardest decision you will get no judgement from anyone on here ❤️

I’m so sorry. Sending you a hug and healing vibes to your piggy. ❤️

To update..things are still quite bad. Both me and my mom are beyond breaking point physically, emotionally and financially right now. As I said on another thread, we had to have my CBS piggy PTS on Monday as she was getting worse. Her friend who had a dental last weekend is still not eating hay and I am looking after her all day long.

We also had a pig with a hay poke who is almost finished his course of drops and fingers crossed seems ok, but now one of my other girls is ill. Seems like a URI, maybe set off when she accompanied the hay poke piggy to the vet last week (it might have been the week before? losing track of time we have been to the vets constantly lately). So she is going to the vet on Friday. I cant decide if she should go alone or have a friend accompany her but I dont want the friend to then get stressed and come down with something next week!

Nothing has changed in our care..they get the recommended diet here, plenty of cosy beds etc I try to look after them as best I can so its really tough having literally almost all of them have issues all in the span of two or three weeks.

I’m so sorry. You really seem to be going through it with your piggies at the moment. Sometimes it happens that there are times when it seems they are all ill at the same time.

Sending you a hug. It’s nothing to do with your care for them. You are a fantastic slave and doing your very best for them in difficult times.

Despite a vet visit and starting medication on Friday the girl with a URI has not improved at all. In fact shes gotten worse, now she won't eat anything and shes surviving on critical care. Really unsure where to go from here apart from putting her under to check her molars (although before this she was always great at eating hay) but I dont know if its wise to do that when she has respiratory issues 🙁 Pretty sure I will be ringing the vet on call tomorrow to see what she thinks.
I'm also increasingly getting more ill because of the constant syringe feeding and stressing. She is only two and half years old 😞

I’m so sorry. It is very stressful when you are caring for a sick piggy. Is she on antibiotics? Every time my Pepper has been on antibiotics he has stopped eating completely. Maybe she will start to eat again once she’s not on them anymore? I really hope she starts to improve soon.

Yes shes on baytril. Thats a possibility. She just seems still poorly in herself too though, staying in bed constantly and her eyes are still a bit not right. I guess even if it affected her appetite I wouldve though it made her start to feel better otherwise and brighten her up but maybe not. Thank you!

I am sorry you are having such a tough time.
I've had quite a few piggies on Baytril, 5 at once for several months in 2022! They have all needed syringe feeding, some more intensively than others but it really impacts the appetite. I found Fibreplex helped. I needed to give Fibreplex and top up syringe feed for 2 weeks after they stopped the Baytril the appetite doesn't come back immediately.

Thanks for the info! Ive started her on fibreplex today hopefully it helps and I'll be asking the vet if we can change to a different antibiotic but will keep in mind it may affect her for a while anyway

I’m sorry you’re going through a difficult time. You are such a loving piggie owner and I know they love you so much. Things will get better, even if it takes a bit. If there’s anything I can do to help let me know ❤️

Thank you @PiggieBoo

She tried to have a little salad tonight but she almost starts gagging and struggling with her mouth as if something is stuck. Maybe her teeth need properly looked at after all 🙁

I cannot offer any more advice but just wanted to send a hug, what a horrible time you are having. Hopefully your piggies will get better and you and your Mum will have happy times again x

We have been given Flagyl instead of baytril now..I'm a bit concerned because from my reading it doesnt sound like it can treat upper respiratory issues, its mainly for stomach and intestinal issues which she doesnt have?

I'm sorry your piggie is unwell. Both the antibiotics you have been given can be used for respiratory infections.
Oh okay thanks for the reassurance! I was worried because it apparently only works on anaerobic bacteria and I couldnt really find any info on it being used for URIs.

Well this girl is continuing to go downhill. She had a dental on wednesday to make sure that wasnt stopping her eating, and the vet discovered her molars will continue to grow in the wrong direction and need trims every few weeks. So even with that prognosis we know we will have to lose her because no one does conscious dentals here and she cant go under GA every month. Despite that we thought we would have a few more weeks before that decision IF she recovered from this URI and starts eating.

She was very bad this morning, totally lethargic, floppy, seemed in pain and couldnt get comfortable, wouldnt tolerate any critical care or food at all. We really thought she seemed like she was on the way out so we had to rush her to the vets, where she said her chest sounds bad. She gave her fluids and decided to start her back on baytril which hadnt worked for the infection before. We begged for some other antibiotic like septrin/sulfatrim or others but she refused and said nothing else is licensed for piggies. Thats true but she also gives us plenty of other medications that arent licensed and has no problem with that so it doesnt even make sense. This vet also refuses to give any loxicom even cat which IS licensed. She seemed annoyed at us turning up late on a Saturday but we knew our piggy wouldnt last like that until Monday.

So it's back to once daily baytril which I really cant see working when it didnt before. Otherwise she will have to be PTS next week solely because they refuse to try other antibiotics which could save her 😞 I'm pretty sure I will then rehome the remaining two piggies because I cant bear to watch them suffer and die due to the lack of decent vet care here anymore.

It will also be our third loss in as many weeks.

I am so sorry, you are having such an awful time right now, compounded by your vet’s unhelpful stance on antibiotics and Loxicom. She needs to do some more research by the sounds of it.
Dental issues are really horrible and rarely do they correct themselves, even with brilliant experienced vets. I was lucky that I could drive a round trip of 600 miles to get regular conscious dental treatment for Ted but it certainly took its tole

Yes i wish I had won the luck lottery to live where I could access Simon and Kim! they sound wonderful from what Ive read on here. Hopefully one day in the future there will be vets with their knowledge and skills accessible to everyone. In the meantime a lot of piggies and other exotics are suffering 😞

Yes, sadly they are. I have just found a surgery which have two exotics vets. They are both really knowledgeable. It has taken me 12 years to find them and is a short 30 minute drive to Falmouth. I still think Simon and Kim are tops though but would only consider seeing them if I was unfortunate enough to have another piggie with dental problems as those two are true specialists

I’m so for you, it must be so hard biting your tongue

How is your piggie doing? I believe mine has one now and i cant even sleep from the not knowing if shes going to be okay. Her breathing is very loud also. I'm hoping to get to the vets tomorrow but if not i dont even know what to do. Its really bad.

You mean you think they have a URI? If so I wouldnt worry too much (although getting to a vet as soon as possible is still important of course)..its one of the most common issues piggies have and the majority of the time is easily treated once theyre prescribed antibiotics. My girl unfortunately was one of the rare cases the go-to antibiotic baytril didnt work with.
