Hi everyone,

My 3 pigs were recently treated for mites with a course of 3 ivermectin injections at the vet. They all improved and were fine (their last injection was last Wednesday), yet for the last couple of days one has got soft faeces, not quite runny but they aren't formed into pellets and his bum is dirty. He's still eating and drinking and is rumbling at his cage mates as per usual, but he does let me cuddle him more and occasionally has been sat in his cage with his coat puffed up... The other 2 are fine.

I have been reading various sites, including Peter Gurney's and wonder if anyone has any other advice? I was going to take him back to the vet today but now am wondering if I should try immodium or diocalm first? Though the vet was nice enough, she didn't seem to know much about piggies :{ so not sure if I should try and find another one.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Have you been giving him lots of green veg? Like lettuce and stuff? Cus sometimes this happens to Toby when I give him a little too much because his stomach is quite sensitive

Thanks for responding Kerry.

No, his diet hasn't changed at all, I feed him dried food, hay and the usual variety of veg - lettuce, pepper, cucumber, carrot etc, and never had a problem before. Think I'm gonna call in Tesco and get some immodium etc and try that, as my partner says he's been bright and cheeky all day, his usual self!

I wouldn't give him immodium as you don't know what is causing the soft poops. The first thing to try would be to stop all fruit and veg for a couple of days, and just give him dry food. This usually sorts out the problem. If no change then take him to the vet :)

Definately do not give immodium, I would try as suggested and withold veg for a couple of days and give extra hay. Make sure there is lots of fresh water available. You could try bio lapis sachets, available from vet surgery and syringe these (made up with water as per instructions). This is a pro bitotic which can help restore normal gut function.
If the diahorrea becomes worse/pig isnt eating and /or is puffed up and lethargic, straight to vet. I would actually try to find a better guinea vet while you can too!

Hi Lavenderjade,

I bought a diarrhea remedy capsule yesterday and gave him a very small amount mixed with water - I decided to do this after reading Peter Gurney's advice pages and other web advice - and also gave him some probiotic stuff too.

He's eating fine, though I've taken him off the veg, much to his disgust, and he's drinking lots also. He's very bright in himself and the stools seem less soft, though not back to normal yet. I'm going to take him to the vet later if there's no change. I think I will find another vet though!

Sorry for my late reply!

But yeah keep doing what you're doing try it for another day it will take a little while for them to go back to normal. It actually happens to Toby alot because of his sensitive tummy but I've cut his green wayy back and he seems to be doing better. But what is strange is that he never used to be like this just recently like few months, he's three so maybe that might be a factor lol. But i'm sure your little guy is fine :)

That's ok Kerry,

Pudding's 3 too, or thereabouts, and it's never happened before. He eats for Britain and never gets an upset tummy, not even with all the newspaper or the various bits of his cage that he tries to eat :))!

He does seem fine in all other aspects, so I hope it'll sort itself out and if not, to the vet! He won't be happy about that though, him and my other 2 had injections and they all screamed the place down, I've never heard anything like it rolleyes ! Bless them.

Hi Ladyday0_5.

Hope all is ok today with your piggy.
I agree with other members advice as above ... if he doesn't improve very soon, take him to the vet as piggies can deteriorate really quickly especially if they get dehydrated.

Did you have a read that older boars can get an impacted anus? That is where they don't have as many, or none at all, pellet poos and the poo becomes a mass within the anal sac. Just a thought.

Hi Goldie,

Thanks for your advice, but Puds is much better now :) and his poo back to normal! I have read all about impaction, thanks, but it definitely wasn't that. I'll keep an eye on him just in case but I think he's fine and hopefully there'll be no more problems.

Thanks to everyone who responded!

Claire
