Dental work

Have they finished the dental now? Which antibiotic are they giving? I am guessing it will be baytril.
She has finished. Waiting for him to eat and then she's thinking about him coming back home. Not sure which antibiotic she's going to give, I'll ask later when she calls back.

I expect you will have an anxious night wondering and waiting.
Just know that we’re all rooting for you and Rollie

Hope that he had a good night and you have good news this morning.
Hope you managed to get some sleep too.
Will check this thread again later today

Thanks all. Your support is very appreciated. ❤️ Just had a call. He's begun to eat on his own, not a lot, but she's happy for him to come home! She's keeping him on metacam but adding tramadol. Got zantac and antibiotics too.

Sounds good.
You will be very relieved to get him home.
Hope he continues to improve.

When Jemimah was post - op last year & then Priscilla recovering from an upset tummy I put a ramekin dish of critical care in the cage for them to encourage them to eat by themselves. It was less stressful than constant syringe feeding.

As an aside - the poll is open for the Salisbury meet. You don't have to commit yourself but it will keep you informed.
Hope you will be able to come.

Got them both home!

Another suggestion I’ve seen on this forum is to puree vegetables as you would for a baby then either syringe feed some or put them in a bowl in the cage.
Some oats scattered around might also help build him up.
He’s in good hands with you

Thank you. He loves oats (when he's in the right mood!) I'll put some in there for him. He ate some kale, grass and little gem- slowly but eaten! He's taken 15mls of cc at 8pm alongside the 4 different medications. Poor little soil doesn't want to see another syringe for a while!

I know that feeling.
When Priscilla had an upset tummy and was on syringe feeding it took 2 of us about 15 minutes to get 1ml of critical care into her!

Hahahahaha we've had moments like that! I would look at videos on YouTube of these really behaved guineas taking syringes and wondering what the hell we were doing wrong! It was like the kripton factor!
Which antibiotic has he been prescribed?
They've prescribed Marbofloxacin. The vet said she wasn't overly concerned about it. It was the spike pushing into it causing the biggest problems. She's been very generous with the pain relief and says we can up it if need be. Can't believe I have him just 0.1ml on Sunday 😒 She's going for 0.48ml twice daily and tramadol top up. What was I thinking?!?!?

Just can't get cc into rollie today! He's still eating grass but the moment those syringes come near him he's not having it. Spoken to vet who has said that we can give tramadol three times a day to see if that helps. Weight is dropping though as I just can't get the cc into him. 😢

A lot of piggies resist syringe feeding.
Do you have someone who can help you?
Have you tried wrapping him in a towel to restrain him?
Offer cc on a spoon- that may help as well.
His normal nuggets mushed up with warm water may also tempt him

Thank you. I normally have my other half with me but he's at work. We struggled this morning too. I've tried softened pellets, he's just not interested. Only grass is getting his attention at the moment. I'm hoping the tramadol will kick in and he'll be more engaging. I hate this feeling. Thanks everyone for your support and advice.

I have real trouble with both chins and pigs and cc. I sometimes 50/50 syringe with cc and their pellets (with Rupert the pig), other times (like with Pedro the chin) I realised there is no way he’s going to take enough to sustain him with that (he blooming hates it, kicks off like a nutter!) so lots of pellets (in different ways, really watery, really stodgy!). It’s about getting a balance on what they like sometimes!
Hard work though so I totally understand (as do lots of us I’m sure!). Jessie the pig is my only piggy that likes it, has only needed it once in six years though! Enjoys it as a treat because she’s odd :D

Hope you can get him feeling better very soon xx

I used to feed poorly ratties and hamsters with baby food, never used with piggies!
The smell’s gotta tempt poorly piggies a lot! I love some of the fruity ones, used to share a pot with my OAP ratty boys! :)

I used to do that will my poorly ratties too. Have only once done it with piggy and carrot baby food. Very messy!
