Hi All

So my sweet girl is genetically predisposed to bladder sludge. To help her we have started Cystease and I am syringing 1 capsule with 2ml of water daily. I noticed on the bottle that there is a loading dose period and the the dose reduces for cats. What do you do for your piggies? Do you keep them at 1 capsule per day or do you reduce it to match the instructions for cats? She is 1.2 KG in case that makes any difference.

Hi

Guinea pigs metabolise medication differently to cats, dogs and rabbits; they need higher dosages.
Please stick with the contents of 1 capsule per day.

What your vet may consider is frusol (furosemide) to encourage stronger pees. We had some very positive feedback from a sanctuary owner whose vet has been prescribing it for any guinea pigs of their who came with bladder stones/sludge but never had a problem after their removal, not even in the tricky weeks immediately after when dietary changes are not yet kicking in.
@furryfriends (TEAS)

Please be aware that there is a balanced sweet spot in the diet and that a diet too low calcium can cause problems as well.

Thank you @Wiebke for the dosage advice. I will look into the frusol with my vet and do some research. I appreciate all the help I can get, we’ve been really battling with this. She passes the sludge regularly, it’s not gritty and we are trying to hold off a flush for now as she had a GA for a spay mid March due to major hormone issues. Vet wants all that to settle before we tackle the bladder.
