Jerry has a daily capsule of Cystaid to help with his bladder sludge. I've ordered a new supply for him from our usual website and they have arrived in a different packaging and are called 'Cystaid Plus'.

Does anyone know if these are the same as the usual Cystaid?

Cystaid is purely glucosamine 125mg

Cystaid plus contains two additional ingredients
L-Theanine 25mg,
Quercetin Dihydrate 20mg

These are "supplements" and a very brief internet trawl shows that
Theanine is primarily used to relieve stress - although there is insufficent evidence to show it is effective. Apparently it can interacs badly with fruseamide and sudafed

Quercatin taken for prostate infections again with insufficient evidence. Kidney damage can result from high doses.

The one thing that would concern me is that, unlike ordinary cystaid which several owners have been told by their vets can be given "ad libitum" with no ill effects to our pigs, I'd be a little more concerned with "Cystaid plus" given these two extra ingredients

Although it's been formulated with cats in mind it might be best to chat to your vet about max dosages.

I've been in touch with the supplier and they explained that Vetplus have now 'upgraded' Cystaid to Cystaid Plus. They advise all owners to check with their vets first before giving to their animals (due to the additional items mentioned by Pebble)

It seems like we won't be able to get Cystaid anymore...

When Midge was diagnosed with a 'problem' bladder I asked her vet for Cystaid. He told me they had stopped using it within the practice and were now prescribing Nutracys +. Midge has been having 1/2 capsule daily for about 4 mths. She's had no problems since

Thanks for the iinfo MidgeandPanda

Nutracys contains quercetin - quoting from manufacturers website

N-Acetyl D Glucosamine offers support to the bladder lining acting as a natural barrier to protect the underlying urinary tract layers.
Quercetin moderates the pro-inflammatory cascade and recent studies have shown Quercetin to be particularly beneficial in supporting urinary tract function.

The Nutracys plus version also contains Tryptophan
L-Tryptophan naturally calms your cat by reducing stress and anxiety levels.

I was also going to suggest Cystease as an alternative but unfortunately it looks like Feliways have followed suit and upgraded their cystease product as it now contains Hyaluronic Acid and L-tryptophan.
N-acetyl glucosamine and hyaluronic acid are key components of the protective GAG layer, which lines the bladder wall in cats.....

Bottom line is think is to discuss the max daily dosage of any of the above products with the vet - especially if your piggie is on other meds such as heart meds/diruetic.

Thanks again, Pebble!

He's not on any heart meds, but takes a daily dose of Metacam, Dibenyline, plus the vitamin supplement Ace-High. He started on half a capsule of Cystaid, but this was increased to a full capsule daily. It was only with the full capsule that we noticed significant improvement.

I'm waiting for the vet to ring me back to discuss this.
