Cuy piggies!

Hi all,

I’ve read a bit about Cuys’s, I know they can be difficult as they are usually very skittish. There’s one for sale on Gumtree, close to us. Would she be safer in our rescue? Is she going to be a handful?! I haven’t messaged for any more information on weight or temperament. She isn’t the usual colour and looks part abby!?

All piggies on Gumtree are at risk, we try and collect the worst, like the pregnant ones we’ve just taken in. Would you say a Cuy is more at risk than your average piggie?

Just had a look at the ad - the seller is adamant about the price and has asked for a 5* home so I don’t think this cuy is at risk as some of the piggies you see in adverts. I think it will be okay with the right owner. Lovely looking cuy though.

I just messaged her and I think you’re right, she said she’s happily living with other piggies. If she’s a cross she’s probably just ‘a big piggie’!

Cuys are slaughtered for meat in Peru.

Cuys are raised for meat just like chickens and other animals are here in the UK. To us it may be abhorrent, being guinea pig lovers, but for those in Peru (and other places) they are a good source of protein and easy to keep.

I'm really not sure why a thread from 9 months ago is being brought up or why the discussion of guinea pigs being raised for food is relevant to what the OP asked in the first place.
