Hello,
Our guinea pig Spike has a corneal ulcer most likely due to him scratching his eye. Went to vet today and was given 3 prescriptoins. One was for pain and the others were for his eyes. One was exocin eye drops and the other is remend corneal repair gel.
I forgot to ask the vet if it was okay to give Spike the drops and gel at the same time or not. Have left message with the vets office but may not hear back for a few hours. Is it okay to use the drops and gel at the same time or should I to space them apart. Able to do so today, but due to my and my wife's work schedules will be harder to do the rest of the week.
I'm assuming that if the vet thought we should space them apart she would have said something, but still want to double check and make sure. Thanks.

I would not give the antibiotic drops and the Remend drops at the same time

Thanks. Just to be clear, you think it wouldn't be okay to give at the same exact time, but ok to give them on the same day, just at separate times during the day. Thanks.

Yes exactly - give them both each day as prescribed but I would leave a gap. Give one and then leave, perhaps half an hour to an hour and then give the other.

Ok, thanks. Gave him his eye drops a lttle earlier and will soon be giving him the gel as well.

Hi

I would strongly recommend that you give the antibiotic first and then wait for at least half an hour for it to be fully absorbed before you apply the remend for rehydration, eye comfort and supporting the healing process deeper inside the eye. Since the eye gel is longer lasting in effect than drops, the feel good factor it provides will be more effective this way round and help cover the interim.
Otherwise, you have to give the Remend before the exocin.

Give the oral analgesic/painkiller roughly every 12 hours (guinea pigs have a much faster metabolism compared to dogs or cats).

Thankfully, unless the damage to the eye is too bad, eye injuries tend to heal pretty straight forward if you can step in with treatment ideally within 24 hours.

Thanks for all your advice. We're planning on giving Spike the gel drops at least 30 minutes after giving him his antibiotic drops.

Once again, thank you all for your advice and hope. I have a follow up question.
Because of our schedules the rest of the week, we can only give Spike his medications early in the morning, then again at night when we get back. So, at 6 and 6:30 in the morning, but not again till at least 6 and 6:30 PM.
Would it be better to give him the eye drops and gel drops twice a day, once in the morning, then again at night when we get back. And if it is, then would it be better to give a second time at 6 PM or wait till say 9 PM or so.
Or should we try to give Spike the eye drops and gel drops 3 times a day, though that would mean giving him his drops in the morning, then 2 times within 3 hours at night, possible 6 PM and then again at 930 PM.
I am pretty sure the vet said to give the drops 2 to 3 times a day, however on the prescription bottles it says to give the antibiotic drops 3 times a day and the gel every 3 hours. Thanks.
