Junior Guinea Pig
Hi there, my 3 year old sow milly has had on off diarrhoea since she was treated twice with antibiotics at the start of the year. For the last 3 weeks however, she has had nearly constant diarrhoea and with blood in occasionally. She has been to the vets twice, first vet tested her urine as she has a history of bladder problems, came back clear. 4 days later she still had diarrhoea and pain passing poop and urine. I took her to our usual cavy savvy vet at this point, who diagnosed her with yet another bout of cystitis and she could hear a wheeze on her chest. She has also lost weight, 50 grams since she was last weighed at the vets back in Feb. The vet has put her on cotrimoxazole 0.53ml 2x a day for 2 weeks, as well as tramadol for the pain. Milly is her usual sassy self other than the constant diarrhoea. She has been having poop soup twice a day since she started the antibiotics and for a while before, she has also had 2 courses of fiberplex which have made no difference. The vet looked at her poop for parasites yet again and this was clear. I took her off all fresh veg for almost a week to see if this helped but it didn't, and the vet has urged me to feed her normally now as she needs vit c. The diarrhoea is also not responding to kaolin as it has done in the past. Just for info, milly cannot take either baytril or metacam as neither agree with her and we have had some horrible side effects from both. My question is, what can I do now? I feel like I've tried everything I can, she has unlimited hay, less than a spoonful of burgess pellets a day, and still there is diarrhoea everywhere and both my pigs are always covered
. Other piggy has no history of diarrhoea but is only 10 weeks old. Please help! I just want to make her better and I'm feeling completely helpless with her at the moment.
