Poor old lady Clover, just doing nail trims and health checks and not only has she barbered the inside of both back legs, her tummy fur is mostly gone today too! Mostly round the sides but also clumps all over her tummy... vets booked again (2nd time this week!) for Sunday.
Maybe there's more causing her pain than just the arthritis, going to ask for an ultrasound scan and xrays on Sunday- I suspect they may need to sedate her because she hates vets and being handled and gets very stressed...
But if she's barbered off all her tummy fur it needs to be done... poor old girl :(

Dear Clover,

I am sorry you might be feeling a little poorly.
Remember to demand lots of extra treats and attention (if attention is your thing).
And I sympathise about not liking the vets - I don't usually either, although my current vet is quite nice and I keep forgetting to give him a nip.

I hope you feel better soon.

Love Ruby xx

Oh poor Ruby. I hope they find out what’s going on so she can start feeling better soon. All the best for Sunday.

Poor Clover. If it's any help, one of my first piggies barbered a strip down her tummy and it was ovarian cysts
Yes cysts was also my thinking after seeing the bald tummy, she barbered the inside of one thigh and her knees in June but we thought this was arthritis and the vet agreed, as she was unsteady on her back legs sometimes and arrived with us with a badly healed broken back leg and has always limped a bit.
But the bald tummy, especially the really bald stripe down one side does suggest cysts. Just hope the vet agrees and will do an ultrasound rather than suggesting mites or a skin condition- I'm happy for them to check for mites and anything else just to rule it out, but just watching her she has quite bad pain somewhere some of the time and if its tummy not just leg joints I want some proper diagnostics, she wont like it but if she's in pain I think its worth finding out for sure what hurts and why. Even if there's nothing to be done at least it might get her more pain relief, she's so brave and so suspicious at the vet, never lets on at all if anything hurts, tough old girl she is!

Aw poor Clover, I hope you find out what’s wrong and it can be either treated or her pain can be managed 🤞

Vets at 1.30, I feel very mean not giving Clover her morning loxicom but I do want the vet to see how she is when she's in pain :(
Not a good morning for her, she couldnt make it to the kitchen area for breakfast, just wheeked very loudly for food bringing to her tunnel- ate it all, then straight back to sleep...
I've written my usual veritable essay to tape to the vet carrier as we still have to stay in the carpark rather than going in.
Paws crossed we get some xrays and/or an ultrasound like I have requested!

Well I'm going to need some advice on this @VickiA @Wiebke @furryfriends (TEAS) if you've ever been asked to give vetergesic/buprenorphine, the preparation usually for injection, by dripping it under the tongue and onto the inside of the cheeks for absorption via the mucous membranes in the mouth?
Not heard of this route of administration myself but we have 10 pre-loaded syringes without needles to slowly drip 0.1mls vetergesic into Clover's mouth twice a day... I'd really appreciate hearing if anyone else has done this?
The vet agreed Clover is in severe pain, possibly more pain than we even guessed I suppose given the buprenorphine.
The vet didnt want to try an ultrasound or positioning her for xray because she's in too much pain... we go back Thursday and will be getting a referral to Rutland House probably. The vet has no clue what hurts, seems like everything hurts :(
Then she came home and nom nom nom ate a big bunch of coriander and scampered off to see her friends!
Poor old girl. So brave. The vet was genuinely baffled, I'm wary of the vetergesic especially this odd route of administration- going to do some reading before trying it out, she got a hefty dose of loxicom for now and we'll try for opioids at bedtime maybe...

Poor girl. I really hope the drugs work. Kisses and healing wheeks from my four.

Poor girl! I'm definitely no expert (far from it) but We gave princess buprecare orally, we just popped it in the side of her mouth if she was tooo wriggly for under tongue :) very good pain relief! Sending healing wheeks for poor clover 😢

I've just read some stuff and the mucous membrane mouth dripping administration method of injectable vetergesic is well known in cats, but the dosage we have is pretty top whack. Although, for cats they suggest starving for an hour before and after as food in the mouth reduces absorption, but obviously piggies always have food in their mouths...
Quite nervous about this, especially as the next chapter in one of the veterinary pharmacology manuals I was browsing was on buprenorphine was about using it for euthanasia...!
Scary times. My poor old not-so-big anymore big pig girl. Might just try a half dose tonight to start with and see how she looks after an hour...
Thanks @Emx93 good to know someone has tried this at home with a cherished pet- theoretical stuff from pharmacology text books and journals is not remotely the same as treating my own furry family!

Big hugs 💗 we used it for a cat as well as a piggy, it didn't work for the cat far too many side efects but princess did great on it and we had no side effects whatsoever :) she switched to tramadol eventually but we didn't have any problems at all with the bupe :) 💖 sending lots of luck and healing vibes 💖 and fingers crossed they figure out the problem soon 💗

I’ve always injected it intramuscular, so not sure about giving it orally.
Thanks that's helpful, what dosage range do piggies usually get? I think 0.1mls of 0.3mg/ml vetergesic twice a day sounds quite a lot as a starting dose, compared to the literature on cat dosage- but we all know piggies metabolise things faster... really helpful though, I rather wish the vet had given us intramuscular injections too... even more scary of course but probably more precise especially with the small volumes...

Princess had 0.2ml of buprecare twice a day 💖
