Hi all! Hope your all ok through the snow:(|)
Just a question for refrence,
a few of my 'pigs have black nails, and i can't cut them properly without seing where the nails are, so if i can't see them, i might accidently cut them:{!
thanks in advance!
Pigpig!

Not tried it yet but have heard if you shine a torch through the nail you can see the quick on black nails.

Trimming little and often is usually the best approach. Trim the sharp ends off the nails (usually no more than 1-2mm in length) at least monthly. If you do catch the quick and make the nail bleed, it will clot on its own. Opinions vary on whether you need to assist the clotting by stemming the flow of blood using flour, styptic powder etc., but even applying them doesn't always fully stop the bleeding.

I find it impossible to hold the piggy and the nail clippers and keep torch shone in right place even with someone else helping. I have a lot of dark nails here and little and often is the way to go.

My Matilda has black nails, see her modelling them below:

I have to admit that poor Matilda has been subject to my sloppy manicure skills and I have nipped her skin. I now just trim them once a week so that I am only taking the ends off.

I did black nailed Lotta today and went for the little and often approach.

I did clip one of my non-black nailed girls, but just the teeniest bit. She made a little noise and it stopped in seconds. Made me feel bad though :(

ben has black nails & i usual do his by a window so i get some light on them touch wood never caught him trim about once a month he's good when he knows they need doing lol xx

I've had black nails before...THEY ROCK! But then, I'm a bit fo a rock chick so it doesn't matter on me..LOL!:)p

Hi guys.... Just to let you know a trick of the trade with other animals if you do nick them the sceptic stick stuff tends to sting ... But flour is good! Do check tho as ive only ever done this on other animals not piggies would not want to harm them x xxxxxx

mind * just thinking ..... the chemicals in the sceptic stick that you can use are **** more harmful than flour! Correct me if I'm wrong

I've found that just applying pressure on the nicked nail for a minute or so does enough. As long as its stopped bleeding then I don't think its an issue.
