One of my girls has Cheilities. She went to the vet a while ago and they said it would go on it's own, but it hasn't. I'm going to take her back to the vets, but wondered if anyone knows if there is anything I can do?
I think she has a good diet. She shares her hutch with two others and they haven't got it.
It grows like a brown scab thing on her nose and then I think she knocks it off, as the scab disappears and her nose is left with a red sore without a scab and then the scab grows back again. There is no sign of it inside her mouth. It definitely does not upset her eating. I don't think it upsets her at all, it just doesn't look nice and worries me. Thank you

Hi

It's quite common, and some pigs always seem to have it, others never get it. You could try tea tree cream or something like Daktarin, which should help (it is fungal).

Easily treated with Daktarin Oral Gel. However there are two important points if the treatment is to be successful.
1) The scabs must be removed before applying the gel. You must ignore any objections the pig might have!
2) Whilst the condition might appear to improve within a few days you must continue applying the gel for 3 weeks to ensure that the fungal infection is treated, otherwise it will recur.

Hiya,

I have had the same problem with Dippy, he had it for ages, Daktarin gel helped at first, but it kept coming back so I read on a German forum that iodine cream/solution is very good for it and I ordered some from Germany (called betaisodona) and it cleared it up really quickly and he hasn't had it since. I have also read they should stay away from apples as the acid in them irritates the skin and they are more prone to get cheilitis.

Good luck, I hope you can get rid of it!

one of my boys will get it if he has apple i just made sure when it was cleared up he didnt get any apple if I want to give his cage mate some apple I remove him and give it to him away from the cage that way there is no bits left in the cage

It can depend on the type of apple, I think. The acidic type, such as Granny Smith's are probably implicated in angular cheilitis.
All of my pigs get a small slice of apple every day and they have no problems. Apple varieties are Russet, Braeburn or Golden Delicious.

I have never used it on my pigs but Gentian Violet solution has been used in the treatment of cheilitis.

Thank you to everyone who has replid. I'm going to try some Daktarin and see how it goes. I used to feed apple to them but I have stopped because of the Cheilitis. Bless her, she really liked her apple too. Thank you allx>>
