Hi , I'm four weeks into being a piggy mum and am looking at helping keep my piggies dry all the time. I have two longer haired girls who are about 13 weeks old
but the very scared one seems to have wet fur round her bum all the time. I wasn't sure if this could be the fact that she seems to live in her card board tunnel
most of the time, so for now I have taken this out and am wondering if putting puppy pads under the shavings would help at all
at the moment I am using newspaper then shavings , and they then seem to spread all the hay around to produce another layer in a lot of areas, would puppy pads
help in soaking up some of the wee a little better, I was then going to look into snowflakes instead of shavings possible in the future

I thought I was going to move over to fleese as everyone raves about it, but my OH has extreme allergies to hair and dust and I'm really uneasy adding the piggies stuff into the machine when hair could then get onto other washing, unless a horse washbag would stop this, and not put him at risk in any way, putting another empty cycle on before our wash wouldn't be an option due cost
I just want to find a better way of flossy not having a wet bum all the time as she wont let me pick her up so washing at the moment really isn't an option for her, I cant even get a brush near her so she is malting like mad, I have tried to brush her a little while she is in her tube ... her only safe place but she jumps and runs, not happy

Yes i put puppy pads under shavings when my pigs are in their outdoor hutch and it makes hutch cleaning easy and stops the wood getting soaked.

Is snowflake like carefresh? Sorry i don't know that one

I'm not sure tabelmabel I just read that it takes in any odour better and better than shavings re dust, it doesn't seem that expensive either so I thought can only give it a go, read it on the bedding post
thanks will get some puppy pads , where do you buy yours ? do you change them every few days ?

I just get cheap ones from poundstretcher. They do the job fine when the pigs are in the hutch as i normally get them out in the garden by day and hutch at night. I was finding they lasted easily a week as the pigs weren't spending 24/7 there.

This year though the pigs are still in the house in a c and c. i prefer pampers bed mats for that with fleece as the cage is in my kitchen. It's coz i have a baby pig and the weather in Scotland is so pants i want him to be more robust before he goes out.

But in the hutch puppy pads and shavings have worked fine most "summers"

I

i use cage liners from amazon,if you type in cage liners into uk amazon you will see what i mean !just bigger and need less of them.they are ideal to use as a base for subtract,eg snowflake softchip, aubiose etc, puppy pads will do the same.it makes cleaning out so much easier,i use them in my outdoor 6 feet tier hutches.hope you find this useful.:)

Hi do you just use the liner then shavings etc straight on top? Wasn't sure if newspaper should or could go between. I was just worried they would see the liners and start eating them?thx

Yes you can do I use the drynites children mattress disposable mats from huggies they come in packs of 7 I fold them in half then cut so 7 will give you enough for 14 changes so much easier to keep bottom of hutch cleaner and dryer and cleaning out is such a doodle now all that you need to do is when changing the hutch roll all the shavings in then jobs done image.webp

I use aubiouse in my litter trays.Keeps them dry, no dust and no smell.@Bosshogg uses snowflake.

I used to use shavings but I went over to vet bed as my boars were getting shavings stuck in their boy bits and the dust was not good for my OH's asthma. I use newspaper on top of the pads in the 2 corners they wet the most, I change this every morning, cuts down on the pad usage, we get lots of free papers. If your piggies can burrow under whatever top layer you are using don't forget to remove any staples. I love vet bed and wouldn't go back to shavings, but it's an expensive outlay to start with.

I use B&M Bargains puppy pads £12.99 for 100 pads, so pleased B&M opened a store near us last year!
@piggieminder... Sorry a really silly question re your b&m pads. .. do u use them with blue pad pattern facing up or the plain white up. The instructions say the blue side up but it doesnt look right.

I'm sure I've had b and m before and blue side down. The plastic backed bit goes down. The soft white absorbing bit face up. Then your shavings or fleece direct on top.

Btw those huggies dry nites are equally as good as the pampers i use. I find them better in the house but puppy pads work perfectly well for outdoor hutches or smaller cages indoors.

Thanks tabelmabel I did think that toothese were easy to get hold of and fit nice in the size cage but open to try most things. Got my snowflake now so all systems go. Thanks again for your help

Yes that's what i meant. I must have b and m too because mine have blue paw prints. Plastic down. Quilt up. That's a better name for it. I called it soft white absorbing bit! I can see that could be confusing lol
