I'm in desperate need of bathing some of my piggys

1 texel , she had a 'short back & long sides' cut last week but stinks & she needs a conditioner lol

1 greasygland'ed boar

then just 9 normal freshing up washes

I have previously used johnsons baby bath & small animal shampoo but neither actually did anything. I use washing up liquid on my g.g boar but its not that good.

is there such things as piggy shampoos for different types?

also i have been told i could use swarfega on my g.g boar but I'm abit worried about this.

Please help my stinky herd :))

I prefer fairy up liquid on my boars gleasegland its not as strong as Swarfega but does the job and it's always in my house :)!

Was he wet before you put the fairy liquid on? It may work better if he's dry as the fairy liquid will then work to get the grease off...I don't know if this is right though as I've never had to clean grease glands before :)) Just a thought ;)

Fred was all lathed up I put a big blob on his grease gland and kept massaging into it, and it started breaking up. He was a big wuss about it too :))!

FleaOrDie. This will deal with any parasitic passengers your piggies will probably have picked up.

If you are close to Vedra you can buy it from her at the Cambridge Cavy Trust. Otherwise search online for a local stockist or buy it online.

I would never use washing up liquid. It is intended to strip grease from dishes. Would you use it on your hair? Imagine what it would feel like if it got in your eyes. At a push use human shampoo, but that won't deal with any parasites, but would be okay for just cleaning up.

I have also used Gorgeous Guineas products.

Will flea or die actually noticebly clean their fur or will it kill parasites & stuff?

Just a note on washing up liquid, i have washed my hair with it after a hair dye experiment phase, to take the 'edge of the colour' as advised by my hairdressors. It didnt do anything except fill my shower with bubbles lol

Fairy lliquid is fine. As the grease gland is at 'the other end' there should not be any chance of it getting near eyes. Same goes for swarfega. xx

Woulde definitely recommend Gorgeous Guineas products, especially Lice and Easy if you think you have crawlies. It's always worth having a bottle of this in. xx

Never use Fairy Liquid as a Soap Substitute

As a strict rule humans should never ever used washing up liquid on skin. Never ever wash your hands with Fairy Liquid. It is a petroleum based product and as such is very easily and commonly contaminatied with Carcinogenious chemicals. As such I regard Fairy Liquid as high risk and potentially very dangerous.

I have done my research on this, and although generally speaking it is quite safe to wash dishes with (because of being dilated by a large ratio of water to product) It is potentially very dangerous to use as a 'soap substitute'. Now, small animals are prone to cancers anyway, so I URGE people not to use Fairy Liquid to wash 'greasy piggies'.

I mean I cannot use it on my bike, because I will absolutely strip the waterproofing away. Remember guys, Fairy Liquid is a Petrolium based product... We all know what that means.

I hope I helped to offer some information on the matter :)

I will find some links for you all during my lunch break.

Most people are unaware of this fact so don't anyone beat themselves up about it. I was unaware until a colleague pointed it out to me and then I was prompted to research it...

Unfortunatly the 'Hands that do dishes...' slogan is misleading, and makes everyone think that Fairy Liquid is 'Kind to Hands'

Anyway, I will get you all some information to read and make your own judgement, but it wasn't mean't as an attack at anyone.

Hope I didn't offend anyone :)

I don't know what to recommend though, so kinda feel bad about coming in and making comments without giving an alternative option. Hope you all can forgive me of that.

Flips, I think, has already highlighted this thread for information,

We use a number of products both medicinal and other for guinea pigs, and used with proper guidance, as Laura has given, these tried and tested products have rarely presented problems, probably no more than some purpose designed products. There will always be exceptions to everything.
However, would be interested to see your articles.

Thank you, and yes, the likelihood of problems arising are rare, but all the same certain products are to be avoided because of their exposure to certain chemicals and/or the fact that they are not to be used neat on skin or hair.

Here is what I have uncovered myself. Now, these are articles that may be seen as bias but for every arguement there are two sides, I prefer to choose the safer of the two. There may be arguements for the otherside too, but I would be here forever listing them all hahahah!

I was going to choose certain paragraphs from the article but I felt I would be wrong of me to encourage people to read only a part of the whole article. But the chemical information is under the list of ingrediants.

I will try to find more articles this evening
