What handsome piggies! That's a good use of a book case - but I know some of my pigs would go right over the top :))

Love the little door at the front

Fab idea! Love it, but Edward would be over that straight away! :))

The weird thing is that I never hear about piggies jumping out of them. They can, but they don't. I know piggies who jump BACK into their cage when they are tired of floortime though:)) . I guess it's a good grade for a cage :)

When mine were in their floor pen the fence was just 20 cm and they never tried to get out, even though I know Mette-Marit can jump higher than that.

You could always add 10 or 20 cm of perspex to the top if you wanted to. But seriously, try your piggies in a pen, it can't just be Swedish piggies who think Billy is home sweet home ?

The ingenuity is outstanding – what a swish designer pad for piggies!
Billy bookcases are really reasonably priced too . . . ssshush my boys will want one :(|)

You could always do the same with an extra deep bookcase - Argos do some.

I think it's a brilliant idea! Wish I had thought about it before doing my numerous cage changes rolleyes

I live the idea of leaving shelves in to make seperate areas.

One thing I just noticed though, the pigs can't see out. They can see their owners when they look in, and I guess they could stand on their back legs to see out, and probably get lots of free roaming time . . . but I like if guinea pigs can look out and see interesting things during the day (though not sure what the pigs would prefer!) :)

That's a nice way to use those shelves...probably much cheaper than buying all the materials separately. You could always cut out small windows and nail some grid to it so they can see out, I think they do enjoy seeing out, if only to see you bringing them food! What about the CUTE guineas on this site as well, so gorgeous! :))

does anybody not think the wood might smell because their wee would seep into it?

We have those exact book shelves and are due to have them replaced! Now scheeming different places round the house that I could use them for piggy excitement! I love the fact that the areas are divided up, it would be great to have that for my boys!

People cover the bottom with lino, pvc carpet, drop cloth or pond liner. It really isn't a hard problem to solve... Corners and such can be treated with pet safe fish tank silicone.

This is just a very cheap way to provide a massive living area for your pigs even if you are not Bob the Builder. Many people make windows too, or substitute the whole front for perspex and such :). Some make an upstaris hayloft from their old petstore cage. Your imagination is the limit :)

How exciting! PM me if you want some construction ideas! I haven't made one of these myself, but seen many and read many construction threads (that you couldn't read because they are in Swedish.

i've just made something similar for my piggies as a temp home for introductions. it cost me £10 to throw together. though as a permanent fixture, you'd be looking at around £25, but that still isn't a huge amount. just takes a little bit of measuring and sawing. as for waterproofing, i stuck lino down to the base before screwing the sides on, and then used aquarium sealant to piggy-proof it. it only took the better part of 2 hours, and is much preferable to buying a cage, as you can alter the design and size.

the reason i made one was because we made a tortoise table for a rescue tortoise at christmas, and i realised how easily it could be altered to suit piggies.

http://redfoottortoise.com/images/TABLE LEFT.JPG <<< tortoise owners do the same with perspex fronts too.

i guess they must be the guinea pigs of the reptile world
