I'm having such a hard time - i wanna cry - 8...

I was using woodshavings before and it was easy to keep clean

Now I'm using towels and fleece and i have to clean it out every day cos it smells and is soaked wet - my poor girlies

I'm so tempted to use puppy training pads :x

They tend to do their wee and poops where their hay is located!! So i was thinking if i could put puppy training pad underneath their hay - problem solved?

What do you all think??/

I sometimes use a old hamster cage tray or * could get a cat litter tray, i used puppy pads and they are great but expensive longterm, i tested puppy pads cotton topped mattress topper and a mixed topped mattress topper. obviously the puppy pad was dry on top instantly but the cotton topped took 20 mins but did dry and the cotton top locked it away from the fleece by sucking it up (mixed topper took ages) the pee dont smell cos it dries, i could probably send you a little toilet pad for you to test if you like (people put them in hidey's for extra protection but i never need them) i can run you up one with what i got left over from my liners?

I originally used woodshavings and then when I found this forum I really liked the idea of fleece but my boys are soooooo stinky and poop so much I was changing them all the time and doing endless amounts of washing. So I gave up and went back to woodshavings. They smell a lot less and their poops fall to the bottom of the cage so they're not walking around in it. I still change them out twice a week. Their play area is fleece covered but the clever little boys never poop or wee in there.

I use fleece and puppy pads and have done so for years now.

Interesting comment about the cost, I assumed that it was pretty expensive, but stuck with it because it's so blooming convenient.

I've just worked out how much it actually costs to use the puppy pads.

I've put a photo record of the setup I use on my blog: http://justpiggin.wordpress.com/2011/08/01/the-guinea-piggery/

My cage is roughly 4.5ft by 5ft and it requires five 90cm x 60cm puppy pads which are changed once a week.

I buy the puppy pads 200 at a time, this costs me £48.50 delivered, so each sheet costs me about 25p. So that £1.25 per clean out.

I don't know how this compares to sawdust and the like, I'm guess quite expensive, but it's not as bad as I thought it might be when compared to how much I pay for hay and pellets.

funnily enough I have thought of the same idea..............they tend to poop and wee only in their hay area :{

So I was thinking today maybe i could put newspaper then woodshavings then hay on top and that would solve the problem :)) I know i will have to brush bits of woodshavings off the fleece but it will only be a little

I'm gonna try this and see how it goes :))

THANK YOU thats amazing I adore your webpage and how to set things up - tarpawlin is an amazing way to line the bottom of cage fantastic :)) originally when i couldnt get correx I bought a bag of tarpawlin but didnt use in the end cos i managed to get correx. Its wonderful cos its waterproof.

I also am very thankful to your costings - if worked out on a daily basis its not that much really at all.

I'm going to try the woodshavings, then puppy pads, then 4Piggies idea of mattress topper

Hurray no more wetness - my poor piggies must feel awful for them to walk on their own wee all wet and bit :(smelly

I am trying my best for them :{@)

THANK YOU EVERYONE xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Wow thats looking brilliant.
Two questions:
1. do you have sawdust in there somewhere, if so its well concealed.
And 2. what are those two big turd shaped things in each of the hay rooms??

I think you're very sensible to try out lots of different things. What works for some people won't suit others and pigs are all different too, so you just need to find the best solution for you. Your cages looks really cosy, I'm sure your pigs are very happy in there!

the only thing I'm worried about with vetbed is what happens if a poo gets squashed on it and you cant hoover it up and its turn to "mush" :(|)
