Burst abcess on guinea pig jaw

Glad you got her seen so quickly, but make sure the vets (whoever you see) shows you how to flush the abscess yourself too, it will need to be done once or twice daily I expect for a week or so.
(two person task I found... Very fidgety pig is easier with two  )

The abscess needs to heal from the inside out, i flushed my Grace's with normal Baytril when she had one in her cheek. But saline solution is an alternative.

She was also having Zithromax orally as its a strong antibiotic that works well generally on abscesses (it didn't seem to lessen her appetite either :) )

Glad you asked the vet for a painkiller for a while too, if she's not in pain she's more likely to keep eating :)

Bet she feels so much better with it burst & less pressure on it :)

Healing vibes being sent your way. It's all looking more positive for her now :D

Bad thing is the vet had to put rosie under anaesthetic to flush it out as it was too painful because it's an abcess on the tooth so I doubt I'd be able to do it at home :( it's already filling up again.

think i would definitely ask for the stronger antibiotic Zithromax to try & dry out the pus, Grace loved taking it (tasted of bananas i think ...well strong smell of bananas) .
If it involves her tooth, i would definitely see if i could get an appt with the 'Cat & Rabbit Clinic' @furryfriends (TEAS) deals with lots of dental abscesses & uses the 'Cat & Rabbit Clinic' as they are dental specialists , they deal with guinea dentistry on virtually a daily basis. only using anaesthesia when necessary to put less strain on the guinea pig.
If the pus is building again already she will probably need her mouth flushed again, unless stronger antibiotics are used.

try contacting the Cat & Rabbit clinic for advice & an estimate on costs, i expect they're shut now ,but you'll need to get her sorted asap as if the teeth are affected, then her appetite will more than likely drop & she needs to keep food going through her system to avoid digestive complications.

hope you can get her sorted, these abscesses are an absolute nightmare, but generally they are treatable & she stands a good chance of a full recovery if you can get the correct treatment quickly.

healing vibes being sent & a big hug for you  as its exhausting dealing with all these piggy illnesses!
keep up the good work :tu: xx

The Cat and Rabbit Clinic is definitely the best place to go, fabulous vets, really knowledgable and have major experience of anything dental. I travel from Cornwall to take my two boys there every 6 weeks they have dental problems. My Bill has recently had tumours removed and you would not have believed it apart from a shaved tummy, he’s made a fantastic recovery x

Hope all goes well now.
Abscesses are horrible to deal with
:)

Hi!

I am very sorry! Which part of the country are you in and can you get as far as Northampton to see the vet most experienced with dental and facial problems (including abscesses). It has bought my Hywel another year of life until just away from his 7th birthday after my local general vets were not able to deal with it.
Simon Maddock sees guinea pigs from as far as Edinburgh and Cornwall for dental problems.

If you can't here is our list of recommended UK vets. I hope that one of them is within your reach: Recommended Guinea Pig Vets
Could I just ask what did they do to treat it because I've got an appointment tomorrow, it's an hour's drive and shes very weak still and weighs less than a kg. I don't think she will survive any surgery.

Sometimes it can be opened up without needing surgery, but Simon will assess when he sees her. When Tilly had an abscess behind her eye, she weighed less than 700g but came through the op absolutely fine. Two days later another abscess burst out and she needed further surgery and again bounced back so quickly. She is now almost a kilo and doing great!

Treatment depends on the abscess (where exactly it sits, how deep it is etc.) and how fit your girl is. With Simon you are in very experienced hands when it comes to assessing and treating abscesses.

So sorry for you and your little piggie, but it’s the kindest thing to do if she has no quality of life x
