Bulging eye

Aaaah I can't believe it, you must be so relieved! I'm so happy for you 😍
Larry was the same, I thought he'd be miserable when we got him but he was completely his normal, happy self - like nothing had happened! I suppose it must be a relief for them too as the source of all the pain is gone.

That’s excellent news! I bet that’s lifted a weight off you. Here’s to her getting all better soon 😚

Peaches isn’t doing so well unfortunately. She is acting like she is in a lot of pain even after her painkiller and not really been eating. We have been syringe feeding her. We are about to take her back to the vet. I really am fearing the worse but don’t want her in any pain.

Wondering if the operation was just too much on her little body.

I'm sorry to hear Peaches isn't doing well.
What kind of painkillers is she on at the moment, and what is the dose? The vet might be able to switch her on to a stronger dose.
Often guinea pigs do decline in the 24 hours after an operation when the initial painkillers start to wear off.
Edit: I'll link Wiebke's guides for you again because they're really informative: Tips For Post-operative Care

I’m sorry to hear that.

Does she have painkillers for you to give her at home? Is she getting them twice a day?

Sending lots of healing vibes your little piggies way 🤞 I know of a couple of piggies that have had an eye removed and did well, so praying it’s a success x

Sorry to hear she’s in pain. What pain relief was she on, what dosage and how often a day? Hopefully the vets will be able to sort her out.

I’m sorry Peaches is not doing so well. I hope the vet can give more pain medication. Good luck.

They’re a bit strange with their dosages. I do still believe they’re a fantastic vet team but they certainly aren’t exotic.

You can share your concerns about the painkiller dosage and go from there.
Fingers crossed your girl can make a fast recovery x

We have been given 0.27ml of Emeprid oral suspension to give every 12 hrs. Was told only to give them if she seems to be in a lot of pain

Also 0.04ml every 8 hrs of Buprecare multi dose

She also has 0.3 of baytril twice daily for 10 days

0.12ml of metacam once a day which was given yesterday.

Seems such a lot for such a little one. She weighs 0.27kg. She was 0.30kg yesterday so has lost weight. We are syringe feeding her every 4 hrs. Using the info on the post that was kindly shared. After the vet she did seem a bit brighter and was taking the food from the syringe herself.

She is cuddled up to her sister on a blanket in her cage but now seems totally miserable. No sign of wanting to eat herself. Will weigh her daily. The vet said her wound looked fine and no sign of infection.

Would be appreciative of any advice or things we could be doing better.

I wonder if the metacam sounds a bit low? I think it's better to give it twice a day as piggies have such fast metabolism.
Do you know if it's cat (0.5mg/ml) or dog (1.5mg/ml) metacam?
Although that could be because she's also on the buprecare. I wonder if that's making her sleepy?

Emeprid is a gut med so to be honest I'd give it to her to perhaps help with her eating and to keep her tummy moving.

Poor piggy, she's being doing so well. Glad she's taking food herself from the syringe though!

Keep fighting little piggy 🤞❤️

Emeprid is a gut stimulating medication, not pain relief. It should help her gut motility and encourage her to want to eat

As she is so small I would think the metacam (albeit once a day) along with buprecare might well be enough. You will have to see how she goes.

So the vet can’t see any sign of infection now but has given baytril for 10 days anyway. That’ll help ensure there definitely isn’t infection now and that hopefully no bacteria can take hold.

You absolutely must keep up. with syringe feeding.
How much is she taking at each sitting?
Ive never syringed one so small, but the less she takes at each sitting the more sittings could be needed which may mean four hours between each feeding is too big of a gap.

She is taking around 1.5ml at a time. We have recovery feed from the vet which she doesn’t really seem to like but is very keen for the mushed up pellets. Would we be ok to go between the two? How often would you recommend feeding?

Mushed up pellets is better than nothing, but I don't think it contains the same amount of fibre that syringe feed does. Have you tried adding a little mashed banana, or maybe some of her mushed up nuggets into the syringe feed? Might make it taste a bit nicer ☺️

I think you're looking at about 60-80ml a day minimum. Keep feeding as much as she will take in one sitting, then give her a break and try again 👍

Absolutely go between the two, that’s perfectly fine. Or even mix the recovery feed in with mushed pellets and see if that helps. The difference is that proper recovery feed is higher in fibre than pellets are.

You are looking to feed an amount which keeps her weight stable each day, it’s not an exact science.
Generally you’d be looking at feeding every two hours, aiming for a minimum of 40-60ml to maintain weight but it can be as much as 100ml. The difference could be with her being so little, as I say, I’ve never syringe fed one so young

Thank you. We will ensure we feed her every two hrs and keep weighing her to ensure she is not dropping any more weight.
I'm sure you'll do a brilliant job.
Remember to look after yourselves too, syringe feeding a poorly piggy is physically and emotionally draining.
How old is your piggy by the way, she seems very small for the typical age (12 weeks) they're sold at in Pets at Home? Have you weighed her companion to compare?

She sadly just died in my husbands arms. We are Devastated but know we did all we could do for her in her short life and dreading telling my sons

I am so angry at myself for going to pets at home. Thank you for all of your support and well wishes.

Oh no I am so sad to hear that.
I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dont be angry at yourself. She has known love and care for the last few days and that is what counts.

I'm so sorry, that's dreadful. ❤ You gave her so much love in her life, and did everything you could for her.
I've attached the guides on bereavement, which have been incredibly helpful to me in the past.

Please tell your children what has happened as soon as possible in a factual but caring way, and give them time to grieve with you as a family.
Again, I'm so sorry about what's happened. None of it was your fault in any way, please be kind to yourself.

You did so well for her and fought for her when no one else would, she was very lucky to have found you.

Do you mind telling me which pets at home you went to?

My thoughts are with you and your family at this time x

It was the bridge of don pets at home. I have always preferred that one and found it calmer than the beach one. Will obviously never get animals again from there. We are waiting for an email from the headquarters.

Thank you for your kind words. X

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you can get compensation for what happened.

Just for some future options for you, unfortunately the closest rescue I could find personally was Cavy Capers and they are in Dundee, you can find them on facebook. Second to that there is one in Ayr, and also the SSPCA in Banchory but I haven’t seen any piggies in this area for months.
Obviously you deserve/need to take time after your gorgeous girls passing, but I thought I would share my knowledge on such as I hardly ever bump into anyone near me haha, and it also may come in handy when you are ready to look for a friend for your remaining piggy.

The forum has a rainbow bridge section where many members find it nice to write a little tribute to their passed on piggies, perhaps it may be a nice thing to do for you and your family. Or not, completely up to you.

I will attach the forums ‘guide’ to the bereavement guides, as it keeps them all in one place if you wish to look through them.
Take care of yourself x

Oh I’m so very sorry you lost her 😞 Please don’t be angry at yourself. You did everything you could for her and she knew what love was in her short little life.

Whilst we promote rescues, it’s not always possible and one of my first piggies came from pets at home (before I knew rescues existed) and she was over 6 when she died and had relatively few health issues in all that time. You were just incredibly unlucky. We live and learn.

Take good care of yourself while you grieve x

I’m sorry to hear she passed away. But she did so knowing a great amount of love and care. You have that to her so please don’t feel guilty about having got her. Who knows where she would have ended up. Take your time to grieve her. Just because it was a few months won’t make it easier or hurt less. Take care of yourselves. 💕

Sleep well beautiful girl 🌈

Oh no! Poor Peaches and poor you 😢
At least she knew a proper happy home where she was loved for the short time she was with you, and you gave her that.
RIP Peaches, over the Rainbow Bridge 🌈❤️
