Brownie... blood in urine...

When Ivy peed she didn't always whimper but you could tell because she became very, very tense and still while she was doing it. It was hurting to pee and so she was trying to let it out bit by bit rather than let it all go (if you've ever had cystitis you'll know what I mean). Part of the reason they gave painkiller was to encourage her to just pee it all away.
Because she'd passed a stone they also x-rayed her to make sure there wasn't another one - this vet thought that there was one in the urethra and I wasn't sure; but I'm not a vet! She didn't have any trouble peeing once the infection had cleared and I never saw another stone or puddle of bloodied pee, and I was watching like a hawk for signs. I think what we might have seen is an accumulation of gritty pee in the urethra that looked like a narrow, thin stone but was actually not a solid mass, so she just peed it all away.
They might suggest an x-ray at some point if they suspect a stone. Poor old George looks like he might have tainted pee again only 2 days after the Baytril has finished but I'll have to get the bath towel out again to check as he peed on a picture of David Attenborough in the newspaper so it might just be that Sir David has run a bit!

Well I have had her on some kitchen roll to check her pee.... twice it showed no pink tinge or blood but she hunched and was clearly in pain 😪.... otherwise, poop is good, eating ok ... back to the vets on friday for a check up..

We're also back in on Friday and they've asked if I can try and take in a urine sample. It's going to be tricky. George is so fat his belly rests on the ground and sops up a lot of the pee. I'm going to have to eyeball him and as soon as I see a puddle appearing chase him off! Luckily he's not showing any signs of pain although I'm keeping up his Metacam just in case. I do feel for you and Brownie - it's distressing to see them in pain. I hope it goes OK. Is she still on her Metacam? If you have any left they might be able to advise on upping the dose over the phone. Lots of luck.

this could be a urinary tract disease or kidney stones. If she strains when urinating or if there is anymore blood please go to the vet. another sign of kidney stones is drinking a lot of water

Yes getting a urine sample wasnt the easiest.. I used the washing up bowl, and had a syringe handy - one of the old calpol ones - and lifted her out as soon as she did a wee... yeah she is still on the metacam, 1.5ml a day which doesnt seem a lot... then what I took in wasnt actually enough to test! Will update on friday.. good luck to George too x

Okay if she stops urinating ever it might be because she is in so much pain. keep a look out on how much she pees! you should give her some lettuce cilantro parsley or carrot tops sprayed with a little water to sooth the pain

Thank you... its hard to tell when she is in the cage ... but I always wash their veg before they have it so its wet.. given her extra cucumber too...

⬆️ I recorded Brownie earlier... no noise when doing a poop.... but this is when she is doing a wee...😪 her pee has a pink tinge still as I have collected a tiny sample..

If that was when she is doing a wee, then she’s in discomfort. I would try to take another sample with you for testing, and I think I’d ask the vet to do an X-ray to check for stones. Poor girlie.

When she poops no noise unless a wee comes with it.. I am planning on getting another sample in the morning before we go to the vets... I can hear her now having a wee in the cage 😪 do you think the metacam is a big enough dose? .15 once a day?

It will do. It will show the vet how much discomfort she’s in x
poor girl.. she has been in a washing up bowl and now the old toy bucket! but she does get extra coriander .... I just hate to hear her as I know she is in pain... Roll on 10.15am tomorrow! x

Dog or cat? Either way it would need to be twice a day as they metabolise it’s so fast.

We have what they call 'dog metacam' which is 1.5mg/ml (this stuff in a purple box: Metacam Oral Suspension for Dogs - From £3.36.)
Guinea pig Ivy was about 1kg in weight and was prescribed 0.2ml per day (I think it might have even been 0.24ml which was what the nurse kept saying but maybe the second decimal place doesn't show on their printer!) but they've told me in the past I could up the dose to do morning and evening. Anyway after she had her teeth done I was giving 0.2ml twice a day (12 hours apart) which I'd done before and it had no adverse effects on her. I'd also done the same under vet recommendation for a different girl, about the same weight, for a bladder stone. Snowflake wasn't x-rayed as the vet could feel the stone blocking the urethra and - long story short - she got it out without a general anaesthetic by "manipulation" (think tube of toothpaste) which can sometimes be done for girls, not so much the boys. Snowflake did come home rather traumatised (the stone was a spiky nightmare) but she didn't have to stay in long and suddenly she could pee properly so eventually (with painkiller and antibiotics) there was a happy ending. That older vet was very confident it could be done but not every vet will take the same approach I'm sure.
Could also just be no stone but you need a different antibiotic. I do feel for you both, it's not nice but try not to worry. (At this point I should add some sort of heart emoji but I can not figure out how to do those things so you'll just have to imagine!)

Ugh, poor Brownie! Ive been through this. My vet does a cystocentisis to collect a sterile urine sample ($$$$) and sends it out to culture ($$$$!) to find out exactly what kind of antibiotic should be used. Last time Baytril didnt work. She's been on "SMZ TMP" and that cleared up the symptoms fast. Maybe they will switch antibiotics and that will do the trick 💕

It just says Metacam on the bottle so I will ask about which one and suggest twice a day..x

Update
Brownie is to have a G.A and an ultrasound this afternoon.
The vet said she can feel 2 lumps which could be ovarian cysts also said her kidneys dont feel smooth ..... if her kidneys are bad she said the prognosis isnt good 😪

Sending hugs.

Ivy had a scan (the tummy had to be clippered as she was very fluffy) and they saw 'incidental' ovarian cysts which surprised me. Vet told us that they develop in quite a number of sows without causing any trouble. My friend had to have her piggy sisters spayed because their large cysts lead to balding along the flanks and the pigs being unwell (they recovered very well) but we didn't see any symptoms like that: vet gave Ivy a good poke around and they didn't cause her any discomfort so even if cysts are there that might not mean anything at all. The kidneys sound a bit more serious -I hope it goes well.

thank you... Brownie has a smooth belly so hopefully she won't need another shave - she had mammory tumours removed in December and was shaved quite a bit... i didn't have her then, she had that done when she was at the rescue..

yes the vet said if its the kidneys it gets a lot more complicated.. I am still waiting for a call.... dreading the news to be honest...

UP-DATE

So the results are in and Poor Brownie has problems with her reproductive parts... Vet has advised that her right ovary is abnormal and is polysistic.. left ovary is ok. There is free fluid in the uterus and infection. Kidneys are fine..... I was all prepared for her having kidney problems so this was a bit of a shock.

So, as my local vet is not an exotic vet I have rung - The Guinea pig vet at Matlock and Brownie is going on Tuesday - Ellie will see her and then do the operation that day if everything tallies up.

I am in shock.... just off to pick Brownie up now from the vets.. she has been there all day bless her...
