Brown Teeth And Cheilitis

so, we checked Rupert over again as his vet appointment is tomorrow as it’s not an emergency. He seems to have brown top teeth. He’s left a lot of his food today as well and normally he demolishes the lot. He’s ate some hay but not a lot. We will mention it to the vet but any ideas what t could be? Is it part of the cheilitis (which we are pretty sure he has) or is it something else?

It can be something stuck between his teeth that has been there for a while, but you have only just noticed after having a closer look at his mouth. It can also be a sign that there is a problem with the tooth if the tooth itself is discoloured.

Cheilitis is not an emergency, but it is something that needs checking and treating as untreated advanced cases can be fatal.

Please stay off fruit and tomatoes if your piggy has cheilitis.

Oh goodness! I’m hoping it’s just something stuck and that they can somehow get it out without having to do too much. I don’t know of any really experienced dental vets around me, it’s taken me a while to find a vets that have a good knowledge in guinea pigs let alone dental work. Fingers crossed. Are dental problems expensive to have fixed? Mr Rupert has already cost us about £150 in vet bills since December because of his head tilt and inner ear infection.

It depends on what is causing it. I would recommend to see your local vet first for a diagnosis.

If the problem is the tooth root itself, then please travel to Northampton to see Simon Maddock; he is by now the most experienced guinea pig dental vet in the whole country. If he needs to operate the tooth out, then you are looking at a similar expense (depending on how complicated the op this and how long it takes) but at least Rupert will be in the safest hands possible. Simon has plenty of experience with root abscesses, unlike many general vets, as I know from my own experience.

My Hywel suffered from an incisor abscess. Thanks to Simon he lived a year longer until shortly before his 7th birthday (he died from an unrelated issue). My local vets were not able to cope when I saw them while Simon was on holiday. Because of that, the abscess went into jaw bone and kept coming back.

@Wiebke My Meemee managed to live an extra 18 months because of Simon. Meemee suffered for 2 months before we took her to Simon. We would often go to Simon every 2 weeks, sometimes 3 weeks. Sometimes we managed to come back every 6 weeks but Meemee's dental problems was a pain in the butt. I would never take my piggies for dental problems other than Simon.
