Hi I'm looking at getting the bluebell cage from pets at home as its 150cm and i have 3 piggys. I was just wondering if the ramp is steep? and also it has no waterproof layer on the floors, so what did you use to make it waterproof

I haven't got the Bluebell, I have the rose cottage. But I used sticky back plastic type lino material to cover the floor to make them waterproof and wipe easily x

Its a nice hutch, not that its any help cause my pigs are in a c&c cage but I had a hutch made for my rabbits and we painted the bottom with a waterproof paint before they went in it

thanks for your advise :) i never thought about paint or lino. the piggys are in a c&c cage atm but i want them to go outside for summer :) i really like the rose cottage cage, but it gets quite costly with £180 for the cage then an additional £50 for the cover but I may end up getting that one, is it good quality?

Yes I didn't buy it for £180. I got it in the sale for £100 so got it as it was only a pound more expensive than the Bluebell at the time. Yes the quality is good. Not had any problems with mine at all and had it about 18 months now.

I've decided to go into pets at home tomorrow and see if it's worth the extra £80 as it was the one I originally wanted but I believe it was around £120 when I was looking. Thanks for your reply though! It's helpful to know it will last :) can't wait to get my piggys out for there first summer outside

No problem at all x :)

At my local pah the bluebell hutch was only £80 last weekend. Not sure when the deal ends but it looks a good hutch and not bad for under £100

@Demi I have this hutch for my rabbits, and ile be honest you will need to waterproof back, as the back panel is 2 bits and it leaks in rain along the join.
Ide say the ladder is a bit steep for piggies, but you can put a wooden box or something similar at bottom and rest the ladder on it so they can jump up and go up ladder.
you can get the wooden hides that lay flat but you can bend them to make a shelter

Wow thanks everyone for all the information! I was thinking of having a cover on the cage all the time to keep it protected and keep the piggys protected from the wind. I had a similar problem with a ramp I made for their c&c cage and used the log tunnel and laid it flat to give them something to jump on and they loved it so I can always do that again :)

my dad had to reinforce it a lot, but i think thats mainly due to pesky rabbits chewing, and my piggies don't have the problem, so should be fine for them

one of my hutches is a Bluebell hutch which I altered for Guinea pigs.

The wood used for the back, flooring, and ramp is not solid but two thin pieces glued together with a gap of air and braces between. The gap at the top of the ramp is very large and there are no rail around the hole, just a straight drop. The back is two separate pieces of wood, a top and bottom section, which can allow water through if not sealed. The Ramp is not fixed just resting against the top and a block of wood on the floor and can be knocked over if not positioned correctly. The ramp is steep, but not the worst and some guinea pigs will use it.

I've shrunk the gap at the top giving a larger floor space, and added a rail around the hole. I didn't need to alter the ladder as the guinea pig are happy to use it, although it would be simple to do so. Younger guinea pigs will usually use ramps, I've hear older pigs who have never had access to one wont use it.

Check everything if you get one before starting to build. I had three different broken parts, from the ladder to the back panels. Pets at home replaced the parts with no questions.

I've also got a rose cottage hutch but prefer the Bluebell as it doesn't have the silly draws, the amount of sawdust\hay\and god knows what else that get out through the gaps and is difficult to get to when cleaning if the hutch is against a wall.

Just to update everyone I am ordering the bluebell hutch after seeing it instore today, it was of better quality than I expected. I plan to line it with Lino and have the cover on it all the time but with the see through bit lifted on good days. It seems to have plenty of room and I have log tunnel to adjust the height of the ramp. Hopefully they will like their summer home :)

its is a great hutch and def the better quality one, just bear in mind the 2 panels at back as it will leak with heavy rain, and check the cover is waterproof and not showerproof :)

Let us know if your pigs like the new hutch as i'm looking to upgrade Chocks living quarters at some point...

I got the £50 one from pets at home so hopefully it will be waterproof, and I will let you know, they aren't going in it until the end of next week but I will update you then :)
