Blue bottles flies

For the last 2 summers, I have been using Johnson's fly strike spray on my piggies. Only a couple of pumps for each pig. I was just wondering if anyone knows when the blue bottle flies will be out and about again and when I should start with the spraying? I am also going to buy some pond mesh to put on the front of the hutch to prevent flies from getting in the hutch but I just feel better if they have a little spray on.

as soon as it starts getting warmer and also when the do muck spreading on the farms. I had a couple of flies in the house yesterday so I have sprayed my boys and there vet bed already.

i have the flies here already. never seen stuff against flystrike on gp's though! only rabbits. link to some products please? or is the rabbit one safe to use?

You don't have to put it on daily. A guinea pig requires 2 to 3 pumps every 7 days.

I used to use rearguard from the vets for my old rabbit. You put it on and it lasts 10-12 weeks it doesn't stop the flies laying but the eggs don't develop into anything, he was very old and smelly bless him so I needed strong stuff.

Does the johnsons stuff keep the flies away?

I'm not sure if you need to spray indoor pigs but I suppose flies do get indoors so I don't no. The Johnsons stuff has a scent to it which I asume keeps the flies away

I don't know when the awful things will be about again, probably when the weather warms up but wanted to say pond netting won't stop them getting into the hutch. I have my run netted & if anything small lands ON it it can get through the gap; much to my annoyance. grrrr
My shed has fly netting (from the £ shop) up at all windows & doors & this does stop them

I thought it was citronella that repelled flies but googled to make sure
Citronella is a known natural repellent of mosquitoes as well as flies

I also thought this was a good tip:
Make natural fly repellent strips.
Many essential oils are naturally effective at repelling flies. Some of these include, citronella, peppermint, eucalyptus, lemongrass and lavender. Cut several strips of fabric from old clothing. Dot each strip with several drops of your essential oil of choice. Hang the strips around the perimeter of your campsite to repel flies and a host of other insects.

I know this refers to campsites but this could be done with rooms/sheds/runs etc.

OMG! :o I didn't know guinea pigs could get fly strike! :red I feel so guilty now, I have had my guinea pigs for 5 years and never took ny precautions for it. Thank Goodness they didn't get it and were lucky. I thought it only occurred in rabbits, chickens and sheep. ")
