Hi everyone, my boy has pink urine and has lost quite a bit of weight, was 1250g now 900g (I’ve not weighed him in a while). Got vets at half 4 today, any thoughts? I’m looking to buy some recovery feed any recommendations?

I’m sorry to hear your boy isn’t well :( that’s a lot of weight to lose. Mushed up pellets mixed with warm water can be syringe fed until you get your recovery food.

Please let us know how you get on at the vets x

So they said his bladder feels large but couldn’t feel any large stones, they squeezed his bladder to see what his urine is like, he passed bloody urine and then some puss. -I’m literally repeating what she said to me as I wasn’t allowed to go in. She said she’d not seen this puss before. Treating him for a UTI with baytril 0.15ml which is to start in the morning as she’s given him a subcut injection of this while there and metacol 0.16ml (for cats) she prescribed this once daily but said he can have it twice, so I’ve given him a dose as soon as I got home and some mushed nuggets with dissolved in water -he’s had 15ml of this, then seemed full. I’ve also given him some fresh basil sprig and some mint leaves which he gobbled up and even had a drink (I filled a water bottle and held it to him and he took some).

she said give it couple of days then if he’s still passing bloody urine they will consider an X-ray, I asked if an ultra sound could be done (may be cheaper) but she said it would prob be about the Same cost as depends wether they need to give him anaesthetic To do it. Which I don’t really want as none of my pigs have responded well following anaesthesia.
really hope he pulls through 🤞

Also ordered oxbow recovery feed on Amazon prime which is coming tomorrow but will continue mushed nuggets until then

My boy also have had a few UTIs but they were very light. Something that helps him a lot with UTI is the oxbow urinary support, I give him one cookie daily and it prevents UTIs. Also when he was ill this supplement helped him to recover faster. I highly recommend them to you!
Hope the medication do its job and your piggie feels better soon. 💕

Just had a look online and they are sold out worldwide 😫

So update, gizmo is a little brighter this morning, given him his meds at 6am and some mushed nuggets he had 15ml. Now eating brekkie. Just wondered what the recovery period will be like? As I think I’ve only got a couple of days of these meds. There’s no more blood stained urine but it’s difficult to tell if he’s passing urine at all (he’s in hutch with his bro). Need to weigh him today and counting down the hours until that Amazon delivery...

Also if I get some pro c, -shall I do that and then can I put it in both the water bottles? Will it do any harm if other boy gets some too?

as you’re syringe feeding him anyway, then just add some of the pro c powder to his mushed pellet syringe feed, that way you can be sure he is getting it. We dont recommend adding anything to their drinking water.
(but, no it wouldn’t hurt if the other piggy got some too)

I wouldn’t think a ‘couple of days worth‘ of meds is going to be enough. It takes a few days before the antibiotics really start making a difference. Your vet needs to be the one to advise whether there is any progress though, Or whether the further X-ray etc is needed and a long course of meds.

I’ve ordered some pro c, how would you recommend I give it then? As in quantity mixed with each syringe feed. Just if it’s only a sprinkle/small amount it’s not going to be of much benefit as it’s mostly sugar 🤔 I’ll give it an hour after the antibiotic

update, he’s still on the antibiotic and yesterday only had the loxicom once (my other half wasn’t sure what to do and I was at work ). His weight is static at 865g and this morning has taken his recovery feed very well. I gave him 17ml. There’s no more pink urine but it is smelly still, just wondered if I should ring the vets for a longer course of meds? I’m assuming it may run out over the weekend how long should they be on antibiotics? And does this sound like a resolving UTI, is this how it goes? Sorry for all the questions thank you. He seemed to do a squeeky wee on me this morning so I'm guessing to give the anti inflammatory twice a day

Id ring the vets and ask about the antibiotics. It’s great he seems to be on the mend but what you don’t want is to stop antibiotics too soon and have some bad bacteria remain.

I agree. I’d phone the vet and ask about getting more antibiotics. The last thing you want is for the antibiotics to run out over the weekend.
I’ve had a piggy on antibiotics for 6-8 weeks before for a stubborn UTI

So I rang them but still waiting for a callback, he seems a lot better today his urine is very smelly though but no longer pink. What’s the average amount of time they have antibiotics for for a UTI? Also he’s put on some weight he’s 915g now 👍

Hi again, I’ve upped the anti-inflammatory to twice a day as he seems uncomfortable when he passes urine, but also when he poos. no more pink urine and his weight is slowly increasing he was 928g yesterday. Takes the crit care really well and is eating his veg hay and drinking. I’m going to switch to emeraid sustain feed as I can’t source a decent sized pack of apple/banana cc. The vet supplied more baytrill as they said he should have had a ten day course and having a check up on Friday.

Hello, I’ve just taken gizmo for his check up. The vet said when examined he passed a large volume of sludge and advised on doing an X-ray to check for stones. So have left him there to do this and they talked about maybe performing a bladder wash out too, using a catheter or something.
he also advised to keep him off ‘the greens’ (asked if I give him lots of kale which he’s not had for over a year). He said just the occasional bit of carrot or apple he can have 🤦‍♀️ What have I done leaving him there?
obv he’s not a piggy savvy vet and this is costing me a fortune.
I’m really not wanting to go down a surgical route if it is stones as I’ve never had good experiences with guinea pigs and surgery or rather anaesthetic and I can’t provide the intensive aftercare he will need (Feeding 2 hourly throughout the day and night).
a few days ago when his anti-inflammatory ran out i noticed a difference in him, he started staying in his bedroom more and his tummy/bottom was wet like he’s dribbling urine out In little bits. He’s still eating and I’ve been syringe feeding him emeraid sustain, his weight yesterday was 978g but the day before was 996g. I weigh him at 3pm so haven’t been able to do it today. Can anyone advise I’m quite worried.

Do you filter his drinking water? Tap water especially in a hard water area contains lots of calcium. Pepper, cucumber, green beans, lettuce (except iceberg) and coriander are all safe veg that can be fed

Yeah although I’ve only recently just started doing it when I bought one. The veg you have mentioned above is what I feed my boys daily, I also give them basil and recently sugar snap peas (just one cut in half a day). What do you think about his suggestion to do a wash out of his bladder? Sounds horrific to me 😵

If done correctly, they can recover well from a bladder flush but the vet has to be really careful whilst doing it. I’d ask your vet how many they have done before giving the go ahead

I’m afraid I’ve no experience with this. But with regards bladder stones, with boars it’s best not to let them ‘pass’ the stones. I believe they have a nook in their system where, if trapped, the stone could cause issues. Are they doing the x rays today hence leaving him there? In any case I think they have to get consent before doing any procedures. Hopefully someone else can give you a better answer.

just got back, they did X-ray said there was a lot of sludge and a couple of mm size stones -not something they would operate on. They did a wash out of his bladder too and got rid of some more sludge. They insisted he should only have 0.16ml once a day of loxicom due to effect on his kidneys. Also suggested I reduce his greens which I don’t agree with a suggested I give a cranberry once a day and some orange 🤦‍♀️ I asked about low calcium food and he said something about oxylate which is the problem.
the worst part is I weighed him and he’s 878g, could that be due to all the sludge they’ve removed? we’re continuing the bay tril too till check up next week.

Also he’s been apart from his bro for 4 hours can I just put him back in the hutch or will they fight?
