Well, my lifestyle has finally caught up with me at the grand old age of 37. The doc told me that my blood pressure is so high I'm in danger of having a stroke at any time. She's put me on medication that is making me feel worse than the blood pressure does. And I have to follow a no fat, no salt, no taste, no fun diet :( Just when I thought that life couldn't get any more miserable, I don't even have dinner to look forward to :D
I know I've brought it on myself. I couldn't carry on being this fat and get away with it forever or I'd be a medical miracle ;D And, if it was up to me I'd carry on as normal because I don't really care enough about myself to worry, but Steve is insisting that I have to do something to stop the rot. Oh well, nice to know he cares. Just wish he could be this concerened when the guins get ill :tickedoff:

Anyhoo... so the question is, do any of you domestic godesses/gods know how to make food taste nice?
Anyone got a low fat, low salt, tasty pasta sauce recipe? Does anyone know what you can eat apart from jacket bl**dy potatoes? xx0
Any help grateful received. Thanks :)

I am so sorry to hear your not well :( you can buy some love thing to spice up your food, i have chicken grilled quiet allot and put lazy garlic or lazy chillies on it and it tastes fab,

The products are in little glass jars and they are all called lazy, ie ginger or chillies ,peppers and so on, they are nice, you can mix them with.

Veggie diets are suppose to be low in allot of things too,

good luck

Debbie!

Sorry that you have high blood pressure but between us all I'm sure that we can help you.

I used to really hate healthy food but now my tastebuds have changed and I feel so much better in myself when
I eat well that now I dont fancy fast food or fatty food that much anymore. ( I'm still greedy though ;D)
It takes time but you will get there

Let me see what I can dig out at home to give you - recipe book wise. Low fat low salt food can be very tasty :)

Thanks guys.
One of my major problems is that I can't cook (seriously can't) and don't know how to put a meal together so when I try to cook healthy meals the effect is disastrous. The best bits are the bits with no taste. If you can taste it you're in trouble ;D That and the fact that I can't be bothered to spend ages in the kitchen just to make an inedible mess makes me a dieting nightmare and I get really fed up really quickly. ;D

oh dear :(

Remember the Atkins diet is excellent for reduction of BP. Mine always goes down. Some GPs aren't keen, but it's the only way you will lose weight and be healthier (in terms of cholesterol. BP, insluin, etc)

Try it ;D

Hi Debbie

Sorry to read about your blood pressure being so high.

have look at

http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/lostart.htm

you can have a free trial for 3 days, imput a few detals about yourself it will give you calories etc, any exercise you take you can earn extra calories. You can keep an online food diary. Its quite good.

I use it to try and maintain at moment.

All best

Deb x

Have you got a vegetable steamer? I couldnt be without mine

Do you have brown carbs? The diabetes nurse I saw a few years ago was strongly against the Atkins diet and warned me not to try it.

Re salt intake: salt is one of those things that you get used to - we stopped using salt 21 years ago and don't miss it now; your palate does get used to it. We use herbs, garlic and onion most times and steaming veg makes them taste different too. You have to watch for hidden salt in gravy and oxo cubes as well as processed food, though - even bread and cereals!

You are allowed to follow Atkins if you're diabetic for a week at a time only :)

Oh Love what a bummer, but it's better to find out now and not later when it's too late :(
I'm sure with all us to encourage you you'll be fine. Yes look up the Atkins and a few cooking websites, maybe if you even get just a couple of basic cookbooks to help you :)
Loads of cuddles and support for you love :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks for all the support guys. :smitten:

have just had the shopping delivered and got lots of healthy food in. I dug out my traffic light diet book and made a list of all the good stuff I liked (wasn't much I can tell you ;D) Then all we had to do is try to make meals out of them. That was the hardest bit.

I'm not allowed any red meat, salt, butter, sugar or fat. No fizzy pop either (even diet) or squash xx0

I've got some chopped toms and passata and some herbs and garlic and stuff. Other people make nice stuff with those ingredients don't they? Any tips? ?

I still say go for Atkins. OK, it's different to what they have told you but people are starting to realise that the no fat diet only makes it harder to lose weight. That way you are filling up on carb which enters the bloodstream as sugar but instead of going to where it is needed (because of the inevitable insulin problems with this sort of diet) the sugar is deposited as fat.

Atkins would be perfect but, I must admit that it won't be hard to give up red meat. I can't remember the last time we've been able to afford any :D

Sars always has high blood pressure, every time its taken its thru the roof
and shes only 21

Hi Debbie

Your nurse at the Doctors surgery should have given you healthy eating sheet

My mom cant have any fats at all just veg and chicken, One thing we learnt along the way which is a god send was the slow cooker and the steamer, you can replace the salt with herbs and other stuff similar, Do you like stews and casseroles you could put some together in bulk and freeze it

I feel for you and totally understand how you feel

Good Luck

Hi Minky,
I didn't get anything like that. She just said look it up on the internet. Mind you, I have enough diet books and stuff round here. You don't get this fat by not dieting for your whole life ;D

I have a steamer which I will dig out. Stuff does taste better when you steam it that's for sure. I'll have to do some experimenting with the herbs and stuff. God help me xx0 ;D

Dont see it as dieting see it as healthy eating thats the key (says me who cant diet at all !)

make a list of the things you do like and see what you can come up with

Mom substitutes the salt with Low salt which she uses sparingly so there are alternatives its a case of looking for them

Although I never add salt to my food, the stuff I eat is probably stuffed to the brim with it. So I have to go back to basics and eat proper food. I just can't make it taste nice. I am seriously a truly rotten cook ;D

Come on love i'm sure you can turn things around, it's not hard to cook a piece of meat and do a lovely salad or some veggies and make them interesting, seriously it's not :)

Have a go at even looking at recipes on line...there's heaps of sites plenty who will take you step by step, come on this will give you two new things to do, one for yourself and your health :-* and one for your cooking abilities :)

Believe me i've tried. Everyone I know refuses to touch anything I've had anything to do with ;D The last time I experimented with food, they went looking for it in Iraq, it was that dangerous. ;D They said they were looking for nuclear weapons because it wasn't as scary as my cooking ;D

And as well, I have millions of fat free recipe books but the ingredients they expect you to have is just unbelievable. Not much good when all you have in the cupboard is half a tin of toms and a loaf of bread ;D

LOL!
I've just tried typing hypertension recipes in google and found some interesting websites. Sounds like you want something simple, no elaborate recipes.
I must admit since having the kids my cooking ability has gone downhill. I use a lot of herbs, garlic and pepper. For veg we mostly have boiled or steamed veg. Since getting guineas we have lots of green leafy veg leftovers too!

Ooh I'll have a go at that. Thanks.

Yep the simpler the better with me :D When I was younger I had a book called the single vegetarian microwave cookbook. It was great. Don't know what ever happened to that.

The one I bought when I first started cooking for my (single) self: 'New Basic Cookery. The best introductory book for the cook' by Good Housekeeping. That's the book I still go back to time and time again - shows how advanced my cooking is!

i'm tempted to get the one called "for the man who only owns one pan" or something. sounds perfect for me. I've never used my oven (or anyone elses for that matter) everything I do is on the hob. ;D

I'm ok thanks.
The tablets knocked me sideways for a couple of days but that's a lot better now. Feeling a little less dizzy today :)
