Dental Blind baby

I feel like making a complaint to the store, I nearly bought one of Pepper's siblings as well, its likely they're all pregnant and they all have the gene :( it's sad to think of a lethal pig in a home that isn't aware of them existing

Sadly not all that rare. I hope that @furryfriends (TEAS) can give you tips and you can find a dental savvy vet or one that is willing to learn to keep the baby alive and going.

If you drop something behind the baby's back or clap your hands and it doesn't react, then it is deaf.

I would certainly complain to the store, best in written form to the store manager.

I hope so, most good vets I've found are further than I can afford to travel, I have a couple I want to try out but it wouldn't surprise me if they aren't great with lethals

She's definitely a dalmatian from your pic, and a solid white baby with eye and teeth issues is very likely a white lethal, sadly. Unfortunately a lot of pet stores, breeders, or even vets may not be aware of the genetics at play here. It can be difficult to tell if some pigs carry the roan gene or not (any pig with patches of white could potentially be 'hiding' roaning in the white coat, not visible to the naked eye.) The good news, as far as that goes, is that roan and dalmatian pigs themselves are perfectly healthy, as they have inherited one healthy dominant gene and it's all they need. Hopefully you can find a good vet to assist with and assess your baby.

Yes hopefully, I'm just happy I got her and not someone who's like how I was when I was new to pigs, we all make mistakes but lethals need some experience at least :)

I know you are wanting to keep her and I really hope you can find a knowledgeable vet to help. However, I just wanted to give you a plan B if you find you are running out of options, for veterinary care for her. We would be willing to offer a permanent place here at TEAS, if needed. I just wanted to make you aware of that.

Okay, thanks for letting me know :)

I had a proper look at her teeth today, before I only looked at the bottom because she was uncomfortable and I didn't want to stress her but her front teeth look withered. I thought her bottom ones might be able to be clipped but what will happen to the top? The look really fragile, will they fall out? If so will they grow back okay or will she always have to be hand fed?

Guinea pigs don’t need incisors to be able to eat. As long as food is cut into strips or grated, they can eat just fine.

I went to the vet today :) they said she's definitely blind and probably deaf but he thinks as she starts eating more her teeth will sort themselves out and if they don't then we just need to get them clipped

Please don’t let them clip teeth. They can splinter allowing infection to get in. A dental bur should be used.

A dental burr is a tool which vibrates at high speed, very similar to the drill that dentists use. You would be very wise to seek an expert dental assessment from Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton if you are planning to keep her. Pre-molars and molars are the grinding teeth that cannot be clipped, they need proper treatment. Incisors should never be clipped as they can shatter, especially in an animal that is vulnerable to tooth problems.

I Just spoke to my mum since she drove me to the appointment, apparently the vet said burr and not clip, sorry for the confusion :)

Okay I have bad news, figured I'd post it here so I don't end up with two threads about Tonic again. She got stepped on... I'm really scared and I have no idea what to look out for, she ate some treats and took a couple steps so I'm hoping things are okay but her balance is really off and she seems disorientated. I've tried to to everything I can to make her comfortable and after feeling her and comparing to her sister I don't think she has anything obviously wrong with her. Is there anything on here about how to care for this situation? Anything I can do? What are the chances she'll survive? I thought she had some swelling in her cheeks but either it went down really fast or I was delirious, her lip was bleeding a little but it's stopped now and like I said she was eating quite happily. I'm so scared of her not making it and a lot of people have told me to put her down just cause she's deaf and blind, I doubt anyone will really be on my side of trying to keep her now...

I just moved her a little closer to me in case she does die since I want to be there and I noticed her jaw seems quite sore on the right hand side, what the chances it's incurable?...

I just thought, should I set up her hospital cage or leave her in her normal cage with the others?

I've got her in her normal cage right now, she looks like she's trying to sleep but she keeps jumping, is this normal after a traumatic situation or is she injured? Sorry for spamming I didn't mean to

I would go along to the emergency vet for a check over and perhaps some pain relief. You already know piggies are good at hiding pain. Please don't be too harsh on yourself, accidents can, and do happen.

What pain relief can I give her? She's barely a week old... I'll get a vet appointment as soon as I can, worst case I already have one booked for 2 weeks away for sexing but I really don't think she can wait that long, it's so hard not to panic when you're losing a pet

I agree that it would be best to take her to see an emergency vet for assessment. We can’t give dosing advice. That must come from a vet. Please let us know what the vet says.

If she has been stepped on by a human? If this is the case she needs to see a vet immediately. She will need a check over to see if any damage has been done and given pain medication x

Is there anything I can do in the meantime? And do you think they'll want to put her down?

No there is nothing really you can do but give her a cosy safe quiet place at the moment. A vet will only put her to sleep if there is no chance of recovery. Pets at home have a Sunday vet service if you cannot get her to see an emergency vets tonight, which you need to try and do tonight x

Pets at home won't let me book an appointment, they always hang up on me :( The last emergency appointment at my vet was the next day but not sure if they do Sundays... I'll do whatever I can

All vets in the UK have to give access to 24 hour vets for emergencies. This does not mean that you will see someone at your usual vets but if they don't offer out of hours themselves they will have a contract with another local one that does. I drive 20-50 mins to my vets depending on traffic but the emergency vet is a 5 min drive up the road for me. Please call your vets as they usually have the out of hours number on a recorded message
