Hi there I'm new to the forum so this is my first post - hope it works ok! I've searched but couldn't find specific info on this so I hope this hasn't been asked before. I wondered if people could advise me if they use a nebuliser with their guinea pigs and if so which one they found the best to use? My vet has advised using a nebuliser with diluted F10 solution for one of my piggies. I've picked up that it should be for pet use as it has smaller droplets but after a quick search on Amazon I'm not sure which are for animal use or which are good for piggies. Thanks

I am tagging @Abi_nurse for you. She should be able to give you the appropriate recommendations.

Hi,

Static nebulisers tend to be less expensive than portable nebulisers, some people use human nebulisers but remove the mask leaving the tube then they place their pigs in a car bord box and or cover their cage with towels and blankets to use it, I've always seen the lugs placed in to the box or cage covered in towels for around 20 min with the vapours mi would Google and or YouTube home made nebulisers and their for you could make your own "chamber" if you will as I think potently it could be stressful following a pig around with a little tube or putting them into s little box.

i have the omron c28 one from evergreen nebulisers :)

eta: i made a chamber using a clear 80ltr storage box with a hole in the side for the nebuliser nozzle to go through. it was then just taped to the side of the box.

keep an extra close eye with F10 aswell. if there is alot of inflammation it can actually make things 'red raw' - that's the closest way i can think to describe it. it doesn't happen often but has been reported and happened with our rabbit matt during our very long quest to find a combination of things to keep his chronic respiratory problems stable. not saying this to scare you, just so you are aware it could be a possibility if your piggy reacts badly :)

Wow thanks for the comments that's really useful. Will continue researching.....

Can I just check @Abi_nurse ( or anyone else) whether you use sterile saline or distilled water with the F10 antiseptic ( or use something else?) I had different advice given about it.

Thanks for the info @Abi_nurse. I spoke to my local piggy rescue and they suggested this model. So I ordered one today - hope it will be ok!
Omron Compair C28P Nebuliser

Yes, this ones fine, used this too. Almost the same as the one I've been using today on a bunny.

It doesn't matter which you choose to use. Both would be fine. When I've used without f10 in he past I've used saline.

we've always been given saline. not sure if it's different for piggies but with our rabbits, the vet said the hypertonic saline 7.2% is the best one to use for respiratory problems (not sure what you are using it for) - also someone told me that all saline is hypertonic anyway but that is just what the vet calls it so i always do aswell :))

we are always given a drip bag of saline to use. and also a big syringe and needle to get it out aswell, plus spare needle tops for hygiene reasons.

we use diluted milton to sterilise all the nebuliser parts after each use aswell :)

I have used a tracheostomy nebuliser as it gives more direct nebulisation than any other form.saline nebulisers and ventolin nebulisers would hlp greatly, but your vet would need to agree to this.it helps to loosening up the mucous which inturnn helps the cavy to breath more comfortablly.

Thanks for the latest replies I rang the company who make F10 before I saw them. By chance I got through to the managing director. He told me that just tap water is fine for nebulising piggies although distilled water makes the nebulisers last longer if you're in a hard water area. However obviously I would guess he's not a vet! Can I check one other thing with people are people using the ratio of 1:250 F10/saline? That's what it says on the bottle but again I've heard different ratios from different people

Not sure if this will work but I'm hoping to tag you in @Abi_nurse . Just wondered how long you or other people nebulised a piggie for? What I mean is when do you expect to see results if the symptoms were quite mild anyway. The vet never told me how long to try nebulising him for but I was guessing around two weeks and then return visit back to the vet?

Thanks and how many days do you suggest I try for before returning to the vet if I don't see any change? @Abi_nurse
