Hello

Can piggies eat beetroot?

On the list it says beets, wasn't sure if this is the same thing?

Just got some from Lidl, they are definitely doing some good deals on fruit and veg at the moment, but if piggies can't have it I'll just have to munch it myself...... oooooo I just love beetroot! x)

So glad you posted so quickly as I was getting ready to slice up the beetroot and try them and it's cooked!

Thank goodness :red

Thanks :)

Just tried to give mine beetroot for the first time and they all turned their noses up at it! Fussy piggies! lol

I tried to find some raw beetroot after I was told Guineas loved it but couldn't see it - only the cooked stuff. Do supermarkets sell it?

It's pretty easy to grow and then you can just pull from the ground, rinse and give to the piggys whole, stalks and all. I do that and they go nuts for it - although look like vampire piggys by the end of it! I can never get it fresh in the supermarkets here (just the bagged beetroot leaves in salad bags) but veg shops do sell it.

can they have the stalks and the leaves too?

It's also my understanding that beetroot leaves are poisonous and should never be given. Apparently they can cause heart problems because of the large amount of folic acid they contain.

I'm not sure about the stalks though. I've read that the stalks and even the skin too are also bad for guinea pigs but I don't know whether or not this is true....does anyone have a definitive answer?....
