Hi, my 6 months old is on a treatment with Baytril injections in order to avoid an infection to a wounded eye. Usually is a very very shitty lityle pig, does lots of big, healthy poops in his corner. Yesterday, after his 3rd injection i came home with him, cleaned his cage and left him alone. I woke up at 4 am to put his cream in the eye and saw that for 15 hours all he did was a few poops small and very unconvincing.i assumed it was because he didn't eat properly and today at 9 am i did found some poops like he used to the them but also smaller ones. so when i went back today for his 4th injection i told the doc what had happened and she gave him the baytril plus some fluids for hydratation and bla bla. I came home with him at 13 and now it's 18 and he made just 2 poops. I know for sure it's because of the antibiotic, he is not on anything else. He eats less than he usually does, not touching the veggies at all, just a bit of hay. I know oral baytril can disturb the tummy but this is why my doc opted for the injections, not to give him diarrhea. Did anyone had this kind of issues with the injections?

Hi!

Please step in with monitoring his weight daily (keep in mind that the poo output generally reflects what has gone in and that you cannot control the over 80% of hay your piggy eats in a day other than by weighing) and step in with syringe feeding support promptly if the baytril has caused loss of appetite.

Take the time to read these two links here. One is a step by step guide for syringe feeding support and the other is a collection of tips for crisis care, including how you can improvise with what you have at home in an emergency.

Poor boy.
If it helps when I’ve had to syringe feed I’ve also added a small piece of mashed banana mixed with the Critical Care or mushed pellets.
I had to wrest the syringe back from Micah!

Another food that goes down well is grated sweet potato with raw oats.

Let us know how things go.

Hi! Coming back with an update. Nogiced that after the injection he won't eat/drink for several hours than he starts eating and pooping pretty normal. I just got back from work and saw that his poops are sticked together and softer than usual... Is he getting a diarheea from the baytril injections? He is eating very little veggies, mostly hay. Sorry if this is gross.

Hi!

I would take him off fresh veg for a day to help him stabilise the gut. hay is over 80% of what a piggy should eat and is needed to keep the gut steady. What most people don't realise is that grass (and therefore hay) is high in vitamin C, which is why guinea pigs never had the need to make their own vitamin C in the first place.

Do you have a healthy companion with whose freshly dropped poos you could make poo soup to help bolster the gut?

Please make sure that you continue to weigh daily to monitor the food intake.

The tummy upset is very much on the mild though.

Hi! Just got back from the vet after another shot of baytril. We will stop the antibiotic. I was given a biotics to help him with the tummy problem. My question is does baytril also cause bloat?
