Just what I need when I'm about to go to bed - Bann's eye has ulcerated.

Argh. I need to start ringing round vets to find someone who can take him, find a taxi who can take him, and hope the vet can take bank transfer.

Damn it I knew his eye wasn't right yesterday.

Sorry. Hopefully you can get him seen (and transported there) soon with not too much hassle.

He's very unimpressed about having been put in the carrier but he already made one death defying leap in mid air (almost a throw, my heart rate will never be normal again) and I need him accessible.

Gonna be a long night I think.

Update - they'll take cash or card for payment, but I don't have the PINs. I might know the number for one but I've no opportunity to test it out. They've said if I can get there they will see him (something like £270 for the consult alone) but if I can't, to regularly flush his eye and see my vet in the morning.

But then what to do with him tonight? I can't leave him in the carrier all night but if I put him into the cage that causes as many problems as it fixes. Sigh. Oh, Bann.

Cripes, £200+ just for a consult! I know it's out of hours, but that still sounds OTT.
Sending healing vibes to Bann, hope you can sort out the appointment and taxi in the end.

Yeah, she did say it in the sort of tone that implied she couldn't blame anyone for balking at it, but if I could get him there I would.

He's back in the cage, at least there I know he's got food and water access the carrier won't have.

I'm going to set an alarm for in a couple of hours. My meds say I can't keep this up til I've slept, I take some hefty night meds and I'm no good to him if I can't stand up straight but I'm having to talk myself into it because I don't want to sleep, I want to help him 😕

I hope you are asleep now and you can get an appointment with your vet in the morning. Bathing it with saline tonight and getting him to your vet in the morning for further treatment/meds will be okay. You need your sleep, it's important you can function for your piggies sake as well as your own.
These days £200 for a night consult is pretty good, much cheaper than here. I've luckily been able to avoid so far!

Morning!
Good luck at the vets today. I hope you have managed to get some sleep.

Basil’s recent emergency hay poke appointment came in at approx £250(including eye drops)on a Sunday evening.

I did get some sleep at least. His eye sort of looks better this morning but he's refusing to get out of bed, probably because I'm too close for his liking. He's still eating though, which is something.

@AidaB that sounds pretty good if the meds were included, they wouldn't have been for Bann. I'd have paid it regardless but I'm guessing it would've been pushing £300+.

Nobody is answering the phone at the vets. I keep getting the "sorry we're closed call back when we're open" message but they should've opened at 8 and I can find nothing on their site to say they're using altered opening hours today.

Hi

Out of hours is going insane. As long as there is no bleeding in the eye, then having it seen within ideally 24 hours is ok. :(

I hope that you can get one of their emergency slots in the day. All the best.

I got through eventually, said I'd be there sometime within the hour. Taxis are a bit slammed even with it being an election day but that's fine.

There is a little bleeding unfortunately. It's not outright pouring with blood or anything but it's crusting around the eye, I managed to soak a bit off last night and it looks in a similar state this morning.

I did wonder about just taking him to the vet and leaving Cam because I had to swap out the hay and bedding in there but I've got them both in there now. Poor sod.

Fingers very firmly crossed. Good that they are seeing him straight away with the bleeding.

Considering the hay they eat I've been lucky on the haypoke front, really. It actually looks like better this morning but I don't know for definite, I'm not experienced enough in these things.

Taxi came early so I'm sat here now. My leg's half numb from sitting them on my knee but I'm more worried about the PIN problem. This is what I get for not buying things in person for several years!

Oh Bann! That looks very sore!
Try not to stress too much, a certain few of my pigs (cough..cough MAUDE!) loves to get hay poke on the regular. In fact she did it last week . It’s always good to have some eye wash and gel on hand until you can see the vet first thing in the morning (if it happens at night!).
Hope his eye heals up quickly! Good luck!

Oh no! Poor Bann and poor you. I’m so sorry that the out of hours vets wanted to charge so much, it’s ridiculous!

All the best at the vets today and for the payment issue. Remember to ask for metacam, they’ll probably give you cat and insanely under dose but I just upped it myself. I always ask for dog x

I've left them both at the vets, the nurse saw him this morning and agreed it needs seeing, but of the two vets they have there one's allergic to guinea pigs (lol) and the other is for surgery duty.

So I've left them for being seen later along with a bag of mint (which was the easiest thing to grab).

He's still eating, probably not as much as he should but he's eating, saw him tucking into the hay myself. 960g, which is a decent weight. They'll do a nail clip for both and check Bann's skin out too.

Felt so weird leaving them though, but his eye's really not right at all.

Aw bless him. Yes Helen is allergic to guinea pigs lol so Vince will see him later on although Helen does see guinea pigs as an emergency she treated both my Ella and Esme when they both got hay poke on a Sunday and she was the only vet

Try not to worry, they’ll be in safe hands x

He actually behaved when trying to weigh him! He's such a sweetheart really, I hate seeing him like this. Especially since he's making such an effort to pretend there's nothing going on.

The house is very quiet.

Edit: sorry @Claire W I missed your question earlier, yeah, it's Valley. I'll be making sure he's got pain relief when I pick them up, he'll need it absolutely.

Yeah the nurse said as much himself. The out of hours being in Bury doesn't help either because that's at least £30 in taxi fares and if they're going from Bury to Rochdale they're wanting paid in advance. Which I can understand, but it really doesn't help.

Can you get your cards set up to pay on your phone? I don't think (never used it myself) you need a pin then, just your phone security.

You know I hadn't even thought of that. It was set up before, but the card used for it had to be replaced. Might be worth checking again.

Also I think I need to nap. I didn't sleep well last night at all.

You should be able to pay over the phone. I have done it a few times. They will need your card number and security number on your card to do that - they should even be able to do it in the reception when you give them your card. It is at least worth a try. But if it works online, it should.
