Baby food for Anorexic and dental issues

Hi guys,

My Oreo has major dental problems and is currently dropping weight like crazy. He’s been seen my the vet (didn’t fix the issue the first time so he has to go back on Jan 6th). He’s only eating by syringe and is currently being feed critical care and the occasional puréed fruit. This is his 3rd week of syringe feeding and he has lost 20-30 grams in the 1.5 weeks. My question is what else can I feed a guinea pig to gain weight? He’s older and I wanted to put some more weight (few grams) on him before his next surgery.
Btw I’ve tried oats but the syringe gets clogged

Leave some oats in the cage for him. Also leave him some mushed up pellets or syringe food in the cage too (as well as syringe feeding). You must continue to syringe feed even after dentals. Unfortunately some vets say not to, to encourage eating; but this is not the case.
please continue with syringe feeding as it shouldn’t affect him choosing to eat his own food too. Syringe feeding can gradually be reduced once he’s gained weight and is eating normally

Feed them as they are rather than through a syringe. You can do a small portion in a bowl for him. Give it to him when you take him out for (one of) his syringe feed.
Sadly he’s too scared to bite anything other than his water and syringe

My guinea pig is very skinny and I wanted to know what you guys think of oats and other foods that would help to put on weight slowly.

stats:
-5 years old
-Dental issues
-Currently being syringe feed critical care due to overgrown teeth.
-he’s 771 grams

Its best if you keep up with the syringe feeding primarily to stop his weight loss, and help him regain the weight. Ultimately adding weight is a very slow process and until his dental issues are dealt with (and during the time he isn’t chewing hay for himself, then his teeth will continue to overgrow), syringe feeding is of utmost importance. You can offer a small amount of oats but you’ve previously said he won’t chew anything other than syringe feeding.

He’s currently devouring his oat flour and critical care :)

that’s good, continue with the syringe feeds of critical care. Regaining lost weight can take months, and as I said, at present your concern is stopping weight loss and getting his dental issues dealt with. Weight gain will come in time when his issues are fixed and he is eating for himself.

My Meg had problems with her teeth earlier in the year. She refused to eat hay but would eat grass. Have you access to dog pee free grass you could try Oreo on?
