Decided to give Aubiose a go so I can compare it to Fitch. Just 3 questions before I start.

Is £11.70 a reasonable price for 20kg?

Our hutch has a wipe clean coating on the wood (it was manufactured like that). I've read not to use newspaper underneath. Should I put something else down or will the wipe clean coating be enough?

Is it essential to put hay on top of the Auboise?

Tagging a few people I know use/have used it but welcome advice from anyone. Thanks.

I got a bale of 20kg for £10.
I think the wipe clean coating will be enough.
I don't think it is essential to but hay but you have to spray water on top with like a disinfectant bottle if you know what I mean and the aubiose acts like a sponge.
I hope this is helpful!:)

I stopped using newspaper a long time ago - the wipe clean surface should be fine and newspaper free is much better for spot cleaning.

I find Aubiose is a bit too prickly -which is why I only use it in their hay trays aka with hay on top.

Your supposed to wet it if your using it in a stable with a drainage. I wouldn't bother in a guinea pigs cage unless your going to wait a few hours for it to dry before putting the pigs back in.

I use a nice thick layer in the boys cage( 2-3inches thick.) I don't use any newspaper underneath because I found although it would soak up the wee it would never dry. The newspaper would get stinky pretty quickly. I don't find it too prickly really but I do scatter hay all over the top of it for them to play with and nest in.

I've found it to be very absorbent and good at controlling the smells of 3 stinky boys;-)
Hope that helps.

Thanks @Davey-cavy - do you have to pick off the wet hay fairly frequently?

I'm going to be trying it with our boys too - the girls are all currently on fleece and I've used care fresh for the first time in the boys hutch as I've actually run out of Fitch. I like care fresh but it's expensive.

the hay doesn't really stay wet. The auboise pulls the moisture through to the bottom of the tray. I put in fresh hay daily any most of it gets eaten or made into nests. The rest I remove every couple of days if there is any great amount before I replace with fresh hay.

I do indeed. Well remembered. There's a small pet supply shop that stocks it but they don't always have it in stock. Where have have you found that stocks it?

I got mine for £7-8 a bale, it's great for smell control really absorbent but is a lil rough for their little feet so the hay helps, also I found both my boys got it stuck in their bum so just be careful of that. I was recommended fitch which I'm pleased with but auboise is easier to spot clean...

I spray water because otherwise it won't absorb water. When you spray water it acts like a sponge. This is true someone said on this forum they had but like a huge amount of aubiose without water and the newspaper was soaked through. You put water so it is like a sponge absorbing liquids .

I paid £13 for a bale, didn't wet it or put anything underneath it. It has excellent drainage and soaking properties which is a great help! I do love the stuff but stopped using it as I couldn't keep travelling miles to get hold of it.

My local pet supplies orders it in for me. I recommend people look for a local equine supplier.

I think Kennelgate sell it too

It was me! I personally don't think it's necessary. My boys wet it for me pretty quickly;-) I don't see any problem spraying it as long as its dry when you put them in. I honestly haven't found the need to wet mine though. Have any other auboise users? @MycuteBoys @PiggyOwner

From what I am reading on the instructions, Aubiose may work more efficiently if pre wetted before use.

I have sent an email to the company . Will let you know when I get a reply

I have read that in the instructions but those instructions are for using it by the bail full with animals that produce large amounts of urine in one go. It will be interesting to see what the manufacturer say though.

@Davey-cavy Wentvale Feeds near Thorpe Audlin on the A639 to Pontefract. I remember ages ago I mentioned that place to you when you were looking for something but I'd never been there. I finally ventured there last week. They sell bales of hay for £4.50 too - might try one. If it isn't very good I can just use it to line the Aubiose!

@PiggyOwner will be interesting to see what they say to your email. I don't fancy in this weather spraying then waiting for it to dry though so good to hear many seem to hve had success without spraying.

I got mine from rd assemblies outside Bicester, it's a farm supplies place. They do megazorb and ready grass too. 70p a kilo for ready grass, 7 quid for megazorb 20kg bag.

They are great and always helpful... now I no longer live in Oxfordshire I have yet to find anywhere as good.

I will check that place out at some point. It sounds interesting.

Mine seem to be fine without wetting. It might be ok in summer to wet it when it will dry quickly.

They were also selling equinola (hope I've remembered the name right). Does anyone have any idea whether that is ok for piggies and/or whether it's any good? It is another hemp based one.

Check the labelling. Some of the hemp based beddings are scented which is no good for gp's

There's a pub called Fox (I think fox and hound) and it's rumoured the chef there moved there to set up on his own having been head chef at Wentbridge House which is a country house hotel in, er, Wentbridge that has a fine dining restaurant and a brasserie. If you like good pub food, might be worth combining the trip.

Saturdays Wentvale feeds seems to be open from about 10-4 then it seems to be open Sunday's for the afternoon and Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. It's not really more than a barn with a few different bedding options, a few shovels and things for horse mucking out and a mountain of bales of straw and hay but the man who was there was nice and they are definitely the sort of place you could get to order you something if they don't have it in. Their phone no. that you find if you google them doesn't work by the way. If you ever want it, I can pass on to you the mobile no. he gave me for them.

Have had answer back from Aubiose ......

My email:

I would be grateful for advice on whether you recommend pre wetting Aubiose when using it as bedding for guinea pigs.

Answer :

Unless your guinea has a severe respiratory problem then I wouldn’t worry about wetting the Aubiose. it is dust free so we only recommend wetting it in these circumstances. My rabbit used to sneeze on shavings but since being on Aubiose I haven’t heard her sneeze once .

Just like @Davey-cavy said - my guinea pigs wet it quick enough anyway :lol!:
