Asda Guinea Pig Nuggets - Reviews

I'm not sure if anyone has reviewed these yet, but thought I would mention to all what I think if them.

I've had my piggies on a typical diet of nuggets, veg and lots of hay. They used to all be on burgess, but having found the cheaper nuggets and, asking around, found no negative opinions of them. So thought I would give them a try and moved my piggies completely over from burgess to asda nuggets to see how it went.

They all loved the nuggets, all four eating them as madly as the burgess! All seemed fine, they went through slightly more of these than the burgess but the nuggets are smaller so that was ok. However after a week of these they've all been weighed and all four have lost weight. None of them are ill so I can presume that this is down to their only diet change in this time.

So as these nuggets seem to provide little to no real nutrition a score of 0/10 for me... Not good at all!

Anybody else have much to say about these nuggets?
 
These are comparable to other UK brands like Burgess and Science Selective etc. I personally feed grainless pellets but I will be including the Asda pellets in my pellet sticky when I finish it.
 
I wonder why they have caused my piggies to lose weight. It seems they really lack something as nothing else in my pigs diet has changed. They all had a weight loss once before when they were eating less of some dodgy hay. Its not much but as 3 of them are still growing any weight loss is significant.

Let us know how it goes! Might try it myself, help keep the cost down of food especially if it is good quality! :)
 
The reason your piggies have lost weight is because burgess is full of sugar. When I weaned mine of burgess they lost weight too. I fed burgess as the vet recommended it but I would not use it now. Guinea pigs should not have grains so I feed vitakraft emotion. You pay for what you get with pellets. Don't worry about the weight loss as it will be excess weight due to eating the burgess.
 
I'm not particularly knowledgeable about different piggy foods, but I worried that the opposite was the case and it was asda nuggets that had the higher proportion of low nutrition ingredients. Just an assumption based on cost and the loss of weight really! Is vitakraft expensive?

This is the link. The first pellet is bunny which is the best but mine did not take to it and the second is vitakraft.

One bag lasts me about a month.
 
I know the may seem expensive but they really are worth it as they are grain and sugar free. Since I switched I rarely see calcium deposits now and my piggies are all weighing less too.
 
The weight loss does concern me a little as I have 3 young pigs still growing and one 5 year old who could do with keeping his weight really!
 
Once they get used to the new food then their weight will stabilise. I have Shereen still weighing 1200g so the food is not doing her any harm! Really hay should be the main food. They only need five pellets each a day.

I'm trying one of those two next time @piggyfan. I have found the perfect feeding hay that's from hay for pets, the right bedding....fleece and Aubiose, veggies are ok so it was just the pellets left to get right :)

That is wonderful. It's great the way you are taking so much trouble to do the best by your boys. They have a great mum.

Awwww Thank you, I'm a very caring person (I got that from my mum she was amazing and so thoughful) so it's just natural to me to want the best for them. I see it as we eat good (mostly home cooked) food and have a nice home so they should too, some of my friends and people at work think I'm crazy for using blankets (fleece) for piggies and not shavings and hay :roll:. What do they know lol. I enjoy spending time with my boys and being on here means I can waffle on about them are you all understand.

That's really lovely of you to say that piggyfan thank you very much :) I think this forum has a lot to do with the happy healthy piggies out there as when I brought my boys I knew I wanted the biggest hutch I could find (without having one made) and I knew I could offer them a loving forever home with lots of fuss and time to care for them all the rest is due to the forum....I've switched their hay, bedding etc after finding the great tips on here they have snuggle sacks, litter trays (which they use), heat pads, cardboard tubes stuffed with hay and treats at run time, ive made cardboard mazes and turned cardboard boxes into tunnels and into places to hide.
When I fetched Alex on Monday one of the ladies, Lisa at the rescue said (after hearing about my boys being very ill when I brought them through Mrs suzy) most people would of taken them straight back! So with that they knew Alex was going to a loving home. The thought honestly never crossed my mind to take my boys back as I see it i took on the reponabity of those little fellas the day I brought them home and the thought of what would of happened had i handed them back makes me shudder I'm sure she would not of spent the hundreds of pounds in vet bills for their treatment they needed.

Hi. Which hay do u use? As I was thinking of ordering from hay for pets too. As I am fed up with PAH. I heard them saying it was ok to keep a rabbit in with g pigs as long as the g pig was an adult. :yikes: I give up. Lol.

Hi Julie, I use the one called Ings, From hay for pets. It's 100% natural, green! smells nice and it lasts ages. I buy the biggest 9kg bag its lasted me months I brought it in mid July and it's still fine, i store it properly. (I only use it for feeding). The strands are really long and it's got lots bits in it aswell, like something that looks like wheat and leaves which my boys enjoy.
