are mites easily identifiable?

hi all!
sorry to jump back on this post, just wondering how long i should wait to put back in carrot houses / tunnels etc? should i wait for the 6 week corse to be finished or could i put them in the cage sooner?

You’ve posted in the right place! It’s best to keep to the same post for the same subject.

It would probably be best to wait until treatment is finished.

I usually wash all the washable stuff and return it each time - but anything like a carrot cottage that's made of cardboard I bin it. Maybe I'd leave it till after the second treatment but I'd bin it and get a new one at the end when they're clear. Wooden things or straw things I take the approach that freezing for a few days kills most stuff off. Or heating - can't remember what it was for moths (when we had moths) but something like 60 degC for so long in the oven. Had to freeze the jumpers etc. for the moths. Wool doesn't like being heated up - but certainly don't put man-made fibres in the oven!

Tbh the first time we got shot of mites or lice I was pretty smug after thinking "well, that's that sorted!" but due to the turnover of older piggies here and possibly passengers on wildlife in the garden (or maybe in the hay?) we probably get caught every couple years or so. But I just don't stress it anymore because xeno is so effective and none of them have ever had any adverse reaction (apart from Louise's alarming wet-look pineapple hairstyle after she's groomed a bit).

I’m having issues with mites my white girl has little black bits on the end of her fur round her face and neck. I was at the vets last week and they took a clipping of my baby’s fur and sent it off. I’ve just heard back and she’s got mites.
I had a strong feeling she did as I took her to a groomer in January to clip her dirty bum hair and that lady told me she had mites, I bought gorgeous Guineas lice and easy and took all the proper steps but clearly it hasn’t worked. I’m picking up oral medication for both my pigs later and they’ll be on it a month. Gutted it’s never ending. Hope your piggys are ok

I’m sorry to hear this. Bathing alone isn’t usually enough to deal with it so I’m glad you’re getting a proper treatment to sort it out

oh no i’m sorry to hear that! you need treatment medication to treat lice / mites i believe, i don’t think shampoo on its own will get rid of them. thankyou i hope yours are too!

just thought id updated you guys..
spoke with our vet today and the girls will receive another treatment next week (2 weeks since first lot) as well as another 2 weeks after that, making that 3 treatments of xeno!😊

Perfect. That should clear up any stragglers and make sure the girls are clear of their visitors.

fingers crossed! they are definitely not as itchy bless them so its definitely working, just glad i noticed!

hi everyone! just posting here again as i’ve got a couple of questions..🥴
so my girls have had their course of xeno (3 lots 2 weeks apart each time) the last lot being on 29/06/2022.
since then, the girls definitely haven’t been itching as much, but how much itching is normal?! i can’t remember how they where before and if they are more itchy than usual? i have looked them over multiple times over the last few weeks, not once finding any lice. the one thing i have noticed however is they both seem to have a little dots of dry skin? its not very noticeable unless you have them sat right in front of your face lol, but i was wondering if its possible we have treated the lice and they just have a bit of sensitive skin from the treatment hence the dandruff?

Mine have actually been scratching more in the heat of the last 3 days but is there a general area for those dots of dry skin or are they scattered all over the body. And are the girls about the same or is there definitely one worse than the other?

i noticed the other day, just little flakes all over both their bodies, i must say though looking today i can barley notice any! its just unsure how often scratching should be!
