Anyone had a go at homemade microwaveable heat pads?

I have a microwaveable pad but would like another heat source, can't afford another so thought homemade one?!
I've found most recipies are rice or buckwheat, people seem to say rice cooks after a while so am thinking buckwheat.

Is there anything I should consider? Is it best to make a sleeping bag style with heated bottom or just a cushion to lay on? They have never chewed another but would double seem so even if they breached one layer there would be back up!

Any pre-existing designs and advice welcome!
 
Don't the wheaty ones lose their heat very quickly? Snugglesafes remain warm for 7-8 hours.
 
Snugglesafe is what I currently have its on the top level of two teir hutch I wanted something I can add to the bottom level maybe under the cosycup or snugglesack just in case the boys want separate areas. It's insulated to the max so I assumed any heat source in there, even if its lost its heat would have increased the ambient temp?
 
Personally, I wouldn't for guinea pigs because I don't think it's worth the risk of them chewing through them. I don't know if buckwheat is dangerous to them ingested, but even if not, if there was a hotspot in the microwave, then chewing through could result in a burnt mouth.

I think things like that are great when you need an emergency heat source as a one off or over a few days with a poorly piggy, but personally, I don't think it's worth it on a day to day basis.

I'd stick to snuggle safe, much safer and they stay warm much longer :)

I'm feeling slightly bad now as you are all hinting to buy another snuggle safe, I just can't justify the expense at the moment money is so tight, i bought one and had to hide the invoice, then had to buy a microwave as my sister refused to let me use the same as she warms the babies bottle with! sob story i know! Was hoping to get advice on homemade options but as you've said they don't hold the heat in it!
 
Sorry, I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, I was just saying what I would do.

If you can't justify buying another one, you don't need to feel bad about it - I've got to wait until next year to get some things I wanted for my sons bedroom due to christmas coming up - everyone has to budget, it's nothing to feel bad about :)
 
It's my fault! Things rarely sound good over the Internet! Christmas is always my personal nightmare!
 
I'm the same with christmas, I struggled enough with it when I was on my own - it's worse now I have a child!

I have no idea how I can afford it this year or even what to buy anyone. Homemade things are seeming like the best option. If I let my son help me hopefully people will think it's cute not cheap haha
 
Lol I vowed as well everyone would get homemade options! It's just trying to think of what to make! Thankfully my family are understanding and don't expect anything, which I think makes them be more generous, which makes me feel guilty it's just a vicious cycle!
 
If you're good at crafty things, family members would love personalised hand made cards instead of gifts. I'm useless at making things, but love cards like that, because I know nobody else will have the same.

As for the snugglesafe, my original ones I paid about £23 each for, but recently got two for nearly that same amount from Zooplus.co.uk (Phone: 01234 430366 ) - as it was my first order I got a discount too. You might like to have a look, anyway.

Have you tried warming bricks up in the oven and covering them? They keep the heat for ages and alhought they maybe wouldn't lie on them they'd still heat the hutch.
