I personally don't think anyone should have to diet. Depriving your body of things can only result in failure. You should have a healthy diet all round and do regular exercise. Dieting can mean that when you do achieve you goal weight, you go back to normal and the weight piles back on. My advice would be to completly change your diet and lifestyle and stick to that, it doesn't have to mean drastic changes like drinking soups/shakes every day or cabbage soup. It just means eat healthily, no more calories tham you burn off, and do regular exercise.

My mums used Slimfast a few times and it's worked but I do agree with like dieting and it all just goes back on. Better with a healthy lifestyle if you can.

Yes but things like getting older when your metabolism slows down, can cause you to put on weight if you don't adjust your dietary and exercise habits, which a lot of people don't do because the change is gradual so they don't notice, then they have to diet to lose it.

Also stress can cause you to put on weight, ie: some people reach for a bottle, others open the fridge door :) me included ;)

Stopping smoking slows your metabolism, so again there can be weight gain.

Thyroid problems can cause weight gain,

In an ideal world we would all eat less fat and go to the gym every day, and stick to it forever and never gain weight, but it's not an ideal world ;D

I'm so weak when it comes to dieting..I plan to start on the weight watcher meals. they seemed to work

so much for the diet now the drummer from Rammstein is teasing me on msn with banana ice cream :'(

Yep I understand about metabolism etc. But you don't always have to diet to loose weight. It's just about changing a few things. A friend of mine lost a stone after not taking sugar in his tea, simple as that, nothing else, no extra exercise, just no added sugar.

I am on a diet, too.

Means I first of all cut out all the beloved sweeties and chocolates. Found myself sitting in the staff room today, tea break, and eating apple slices instead of slurping pot noodles *sigh*

have tried that but as i suffer with underactive thyroid and PCOS it makes lsoing weight harder even weight watchers told me i was wasting my money, after losing 2lb in 5 weeks and sticking to the diet, a diet like herbalife helps me to get going, I have the usual high blood pressure and diabetes as well as arthritis, so need to find a good confidence boosting way to lose weight and I actually like the shakes and drinks they also have vitamins and fiber fillers and lots more , my dr checked it out for me before i dared go on it and he said it was fine and medically safe,

I will be starting Atkins again on Sunday - excellent eating plan, lose weight healthily and feel great.

I will also still be running three times a week, and I am getting a running machine, so excited!

cant do Atkins as I'm a vegitarian, good luck with your running and diet,
but have tried the herbalife cookies and cream and its yummy with little crunchy bits in it

I am doing Cambridge diet.. which is a meal replacement too. :).

Have lost over 30lbs now on it. :). Its really good. It was hard to start but got easier as time progressed and never felt hungry at all. Like most have tried all the other diets but its so hard and slow! Cambridge is a very good. I can really recommend it. Did anyone see the story this week of the lady who weighted 24 stone ? and lost 10 st? shes doing Cambridge.

I am just starting maintenance now and gradually introducing further foods to find my bodys level which will maintain.

You can do Cambridge if you are a veggie, and have heard its good if you PCOS too.

Certainly feel better for getting rid of those excess pounds.

I am alright with my weight as such, even though I have put some on over the last few years.
But I want to lose weight for my wedding in August, so thats why I diet. By all means, if my body wants to put it back on afterwards, so be it.
I just want to look good in my dress.

basically if you eat the right amount of calories leaving out sugar and fatty stuff excercise enough then your weight should stay stable and you would even lose any excess weight but thats in an ideal world and people with illnesses and addictions are not in that type of state of mind to be able to manage, thats when things like cambridge herbalife and atkins comes in and give you confidence when you see the weight dropping off,
I go by my clothes how over weight i am I rarely weigh myself my Dr does it for me but i do say dont tell me as i dont want to be depressed, but he does tell me like when I lost 8lb I can tell you I was deleriously happy, so its state of mind dieting improves as well,

I think I have tried all the faddy diets and now simply concentrate on a healthy eating plan and extra dog walking.

Having lost a friend recently to cancer and having another dealing with it. I'm more interested in putting organic (where possible) good quality veggie food in my mouth and avoiding as many additives, preservatives etc as I can. It's what works for me and a long term change in our eating habits (for the better) is really the only thing that keeps weight off long term.
I personally think that we eat too much "rubbish" and it not doing our health any good.
I agree obesity is a killer, but the diet industry has brainwashed us into thinking that we should lose fat at almost any cost...and the quicker they promise we will lose it, the keener we are generally to buy into their business :-\

I appreciate that the cereal bars, drinks and soups etc can give a quick result, but does it last?
As always though, it's each to their own :)

I am going to start cutting down on the 8th.. we still have so much crap in the house from Christmas that hasnt been eaten so I've told Steve its all going on the 7th! hehe

I dont think i'm going on a particular diet in the beginning - just gonna try cutting down, not eating as much chocs and crisps and drinking more water! Also gonna get swimming again - if this fails I'm going to go back to weightwatchers....

Good luck everyone! :)

I am doing the new Weight watchers 'Core Plan' which is pretty much the same as full choice. I find it really easy to do... now that Xmas is over!

Gave up dieting years ago after trying them all and failing!

I have 2 addictions in my life now - guinea pigs and fitness classes! Currently do 5 fitness classes a week (which is actually a healthy balance for me as last summer I was doing 11 and making myself ill!). I don't always eat well and am carrying a bit of extra weight but have already lost 4 stone over the last 2 years so I am just carrying on trying to limit my 'junk food' to lose the last 2 stone.

Good Luck to everyone - losing weight is so hard!

I've only ever been on two diets in my entire life (I'm not that ancient, just a little bit older than I'd like to be ;))

I'd become so used to eating when I felt a bit peckish(especially when I was pregnant) and not wanting to feel in the least bit uncomfortable with hunger, instead of waiting for mealtimes, that my weight had gradually increased. When I dieted I stopped eating snacks and just had smaller, healthier meals. No products marketed as "diet foods". Some of those may be low on fat but just see how much sugar they have instead!

I know from friends that Weight Watchers works, but whatever way a person loses weight they have to find a way of keeping it off (healthy food / exercise, whatever works for the individual) otherwise it just creeps back on. And then you're on a yo-yo.

I've put weight on over Christmas, but because I'm much more active now, I'm not worried about it. Once I get out there walking and gardening I'll work it off.

I'm hoping a quick start and fast results will spur me on to take more control of my eating habits I dont intend staying on any diet for long I just need the confidence to get going, I agree lower cals and more excercise is whats needed but we also need a confidence boost,
I also have been thinking of how come there was many plump women in the war years yet food was rationed and they were all walking and digging for victory etc, I've found some 1940s recipe books they are fascinating,
also the renassaince paintings all had plump ladys and they were considered beautys , so maybe we were always ment to be cuddly plump and the dieters are getting it wrong,

I agree that there's nothing wrong with being a bit plump. In fact there's nothing wrong with being any particular size as long as it's not causing health problems and the person is happy as they are.

Centuries ago, it was an advantage to be able to put on weight when food was plentiful so that you could survive the barren times in the winter. So "plump" people were considered healthier.

Nowadays, there is so much peer pressure and pressure from the media, to be unnaturally thin, that young women can feel failures if they can't meet those "ideals". It all goes hand in hand with the general lack of confidence that some teenage girls feel as they are growing up and the need to "fit in".

I really worry about how things will be for my daughter when she's older. She's only 6 now and well within the normal weight range for her age and height. But she's certainly not a naturally skinny girl and I hope she accepts this as she grows up and doesn't set herself unrealistic expectations to look like the models and celebrities in glossy magazines.

We come in all different shapes and sizes, genetically, and we have to respect ourselves and others for that. :)

I know what you mean my 11 year old daughter is naturally thin like her dad and long legs, but then again my mum was a size 8 as a teen and I was a size 12 so who is to say that being naturally thin might not change in later life, as it did for mum and me , I was a size 14 for years and have had 5 kids and am now a size 16 so its only one dress size if it was'nt for my ill health I would say forget it I'm staying as i am,

FIRST DAY TODAY!

Went OK.

I have eaten chicken, cheese, rocket, tomatoes, cold beef and cold pork.

Yummy!
