Another vet visit for Pretty Patsy.

Sending hugs and supportive old lady wheeks for Patsy from Jezzy floof and Clover! They are also entering the "at least 5 but possibly a fair bit older" stage with aches and pains and weight loss (Clover) and smelly bums and lumps and bumps (Jezzy)...
Whatever you decide for Patsy will be the right decision, you know her best to balance how much she enjoys life as she is now vs the surgery risks x

Whatever decision you make for Patsy will be made out of love and consideration for her best interests, so it won’t be wrong. I hope she continues to hold a steady weight and give you less cause for concern x

I really don't know what to do! Given her age she may not have that long left and I may put her through unnecesary pain with the injections or a spay. I have just heard back from Rachel who said that its 3 injections over 3 weeks at 1 a week. I can imagine it would be quite painful. @GPTV did one of your piggies have the hormone injections for ovarian cysts? Was it successful?

Tough call, especially as you don’t know Patsy’s real age.
Why don’t you carry on observing but make a decision.
Live with for a few days and then see how you feel.
If after reflection time the decision feels right then go for it.
If you don’t feel comfortable then that’s not the right decision and you make a different one.

You promised Patsy a forever home. A home filled with love and the best possible care.
This is what you are delivering and sometimes it comes with a price of difficult decisions.

Holding you in my heart ♥️

Hiya sorry I've not been on here much lately, I've not had the chance to read through the rest of the thread yet.

But yes Ellie had the HCG Chorulon injections.
2 injections 7-10 days apart both given in her rump (she shrieked a bit with both, but forgot seconds afterwards with scoffing veggie bribes in her face!)
Ellie was 6yrs old, had persistent genital bleeding & ongoing uti's. She had a conscious ultrasound scan & a walnut sized ovarian cyst was discovered.

The vet wasn't happy to operate on/spay Ellie due to her age with related anaesthetic risks, they're not exotic vets & that they didn't have many gpigs though the doors.

She suggested palliative care was the way to go...

My suggestion of the hormone treatment after others had mentioned it on here was bit of a research bonus for the vet I think.

The vet contacted the hormone manufacturer for advice & dosage info.

Its normally used as a cattle hormone so usually provided in a large vial dose & the vet only used a fraction of the vial. The rest had to be discarded, although I had to pay for the complete vial.

Not sure how much your vet would charge.... But I see that you can get the vials from
Chorulon 1500IU Powder & Solvent (5 x 5ml) From £48.20
For £57 with free P&P, you will need a veterinary prescription to purchase this, so you'll need to factor in the vets charge the prescription.

I use Viovet for a lot of products, but it's currently out of stock & a lot more expensive from them.
It might be worth asking the vet if this is the correct treatment & to get it delivered to them if it's cheaper than buying directly from the vet?

Ellie's coat became really glossy, smooth and silky within days, she seemed more relaxed generally & within a few weeks her cyst had reduced in size so much you could hardly find it.
Ellie had one more bad bleed after the injection, then never again :D

The treatment lasted approx. 12 months and then she had a repeat of the first treatment, this also lasted about 12 months.
I lost Ellie aged 8yrs to other health issues. :(

The injections worked brilliantly for Ellie, but sometimes they don't seem to make any difference - it depends on the individual piggy & the cyst.
There seems to be very little information to be found on side effects of using the hormone. It either seems to work or it doesn't generally.

Good luck with the decision on pretty Patsy & hopefully she'll soon feel better, whatever treatment you decide to have.

Thanks @GPTV that has helped me. Vet said that it would be £75 and 3 injections a week apart. Patsy has lost another 20g since I weighed her on Monday so she had an extra breakfast this morning of SS Recovery Plus and a strawberry top which went down well. She'll be having extra breakfasts for a few days too to see if we can get her weight back up. She happily eats it out of the bowl which is lucky as then I don't feel I'm forcing it down her in the syringe. She eats what she wants to and then leaves the rest and then the other two get to finish it off. Rachel has advised me to weigh her daily for a week to see if being away from home has caused her stress as all of the girls had lost a bit of weight.

Thanks Heather what a good idea. I've already decided not to go ahead with a spay due to her age so it's a decision between doing nothing and leaving her be or the injections. @GPTV has helped with her reply but I'm still unsure what is for the best.

My vet advised that it's a 50/50 chance whether hormone injections will work as it depends whether the cysts are caused by hormones. Jasmine had these (Chorulon) and they did decrease the size of the cysts for a time, but she did eventually need to be spayed six months later.

I would say that, judging by Jasmine's reaction, it was a moment of brief discomfort (and maybe some post-jab soreness) once a week for three weeks. However, Jasmine wasn't aware it would be once a week for three weeks; she only knew it was happening at the time, so I don't think it mentally had much of an affect on her in the same way it would if it were me!

I totally understand you not going ahead with the spay. It took an awful lot out of Jasmine and it was a lot of work and stress for two to three weeks.

I have no advice to offer, I'm sure in your heart you will know the best choice, you have given her the best time with you and loved her which is all we can do, sometimes that also comes with the hardest decisions. Sending hugs and wheeks 🤗

I have made my decision about what to do with Patsy. She is happy bimbling away and being her usual cheeky self and she has started to put the weight back on she lost over the week she was staying with Aunty Lucy. As @Merab's Slave suggested, I made a decision to give her the hormone injections, lived with it for a few days and wasn't happy with my decision, a spay is not a option because of her age so she is not going to have the injections for the moment.

Wishing Patsy lots of healing vibes and hoping she puts that weight back on now she is settled back home. I think a spay is a big op especially not knowing Patsy’s exact age x
