((HUGE HUGS)) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: How is he today? Hopefully the vets can help you :-* :-* bless him, he sounds like a lovely guy :-* :-* :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: ((HUGE HUGGLES AND PIGGIE KISSES)) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
Thinking of you :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks Cavy Love, the vet was really pleased with his progress, and said it was normal that it would hurt to pass wee and poops, and the fact that he was doing so was good, means his guts are working.
They are not sure what will happen re the stones in his cecum. They stressed again not to give him Metacam more than once every 3 days as he is quite small..

Metacam can be given at the dose rate of one drop per day for 3 days. After that go as long as you can between doses.I put the drop onto a spoon, add a few drops of water, then syringe it into the mouth.Putting it on the food is no good because the piggy may not eat all of it.It is a bit dangerous to put the drop straight into the mouth because the droppers are not all that accurate.Sometimes a large blob will squirt out.

This condition is almost certainly genetic. It is not one that I have come across.I do not really understand why the stones could not have been removed, unless they are,the prognosis is not good.

Hi Mary,
They said to cut into the cecum would carry a high risk of infection...
I thought it would probably be genetic too, I read up about the cecum and it says that its a storage place between the large and small intestine for plant matter and breaking it down..
I am just concerned about the metacam as 2 vets have advised no more than a drop every 3 days, yet i trust what you guys say too..
I asked the vet about the prognosis, they said they don't really know as they have never cone across this before, its a case of wait and see. I hope Roly can pass these stones, if not it doesn't bear thinking about.

It is true that there would be a risk of infection to cut into the cecum, but there is a small risk of infection with any surgery.I think it would be better to get those stones removed because they are going to cause ongoing pain, and infection could set in anyway. One drop of Metacam per day is safe, but is not for long term use.My piggy Truffle who has recently had major surgery had one drop per day for 3 days and she is back to normal now.

Would your vet be willing to email my vet?,she may be able to advise re surgery.Anne is a gp expert and is a brilliant vet.She did a double op on Truffle which I know no other vet would have done, and a friends pig had 2 ops in the space of 2 weeks,no other vet would have done that either. He is back to normal now as well.

I think this is a case of surgery or pts.Stones in that position I am afraid will not pass through.

This is a horrible position to be in and I do feel for you.I feel that surgery would givehim a chance.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hugs from The Epsom Mob

sending hugs and cuddles to you and roly. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: sending prayers to you to help you make the right decision for roly. hoping he and huxley are better. give both a cuddle from me. :smitten: know we are thinking of you, and the girls send :-* :-* :-* hoping all goes well. :smitten: even with people and surgery there is a risk of infection, perhaps get your vet to talk with dr taylor and maybe they can go from there? they helped me and i still have zoe :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: take care and may god give you strength and comfort. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

He's doing OK thanks, just not doing many poops. He is eating timothy hay, he had some critical care earlier today and has had some dandy leaves.
he's never been a big eater, just a bit worried that he isn't pooping so much, just doing little ones. We have put probiotic in his water, he does drin quite a bit, so hopefully with that and they hay and bits of food he is getting enough.
We tried putting a sock tube round him yesterday to stop him itching his scar - he looked sooo funny, but managed to wriggle out of it, little demon. Still he doesn't seem to have lost much weight..
Back to the vets tomorrow with him and Huxley.

He seems a bit better today - eating bits and bobs, we also found some little poops! The vets said his scar looked good and he doesn't seem to be scratching at it. We managed to get some Metacam into him too so hopefully he will be a bit more comfortable. (We put a blob onto the end of the syringe of crtical care).

Long term they don't know what to do yet. If the stones in his cecum are causing him real problems then they may have to operate but they dont want to unless absolutely necessary due to the risk of infection. Poor Roly. Hopefully he will recover from his op and be OK. The best outcome would be if he passed the stones.

He's a good boy - he's never been a guzzler like the others so its nice to see him eating. Poor little Roly. :(
The girl I got him off at work said that he had not really been handled much - its what we thought when we saw the state of his water bottles (bright green inside). Hope he has a good few years with us!

The vet was really pleased with Roly on Monday - his scar is healing nicely and he seems bright and healthy! Hooray! He is eating normally and doing proper poo beans, only one spot of blood. We are made up, we were really worried about him as he is so nervous and a picky eater, but he has been tucking into timothy hay and dandy leaves with gusto. The pain seems to be lessening too.

I guess now its a case of watching him to see if the dreaded stones cause him any trouble..

Only just caught up with this thread. bless little Roly, I'm so glad he's improving Katie and really sorry i havent been on to ask after him. Hope he's completely healthy in no time x

I'm so glad he is better in himself Katie and I'm sure he will have many happy years with you :)
