A bit of planning ahead, help welcomed.

I stuck the carpet onto mine with waterproof carpet tape.

Great tip thanks. I wish I was getting them sooner now. I plan on getting three sows. Assuming P@H get this right 😐

Remember to check their sexes cos shops have been known to get it wrong. With P@H you should get a phone call to see how your piggies are settling in (I did) and a free health check from Vets4Pets after 7-10 days although you have to make the appointment yourself. My P@H has a Vets4Pets in the store so this may not be the case for all P@H stores.

Yes I saw that they do that. Pretty decent I think. I went with my kid to the shop and got some very honest and sincere advice from a guy there. I will definitely go back there when the time comes. 😀

If you want to be 100% sure you get piggies that are correctly sexed and have been health checked by a vet then you could always opt for the rescue route. All the rescues listed on our rescue locator are of top standard for their rehoming practices and policies. Another benefit of rescuing is that the rescue will try to match you with suitable piggies. E.g. as you have little ones they may recommend some that are calmer and more used to being handled

I've never been told about the free health check when I have had piggies from their adoption centre so I wonder if this is only when buying babies or whether it's because they don't have an in-store vets

As much as I'd like to we don't have a car, and I did check on this forum but they're all pretty far from us and quite remote. P@H is a five minute walk on the other hand. I'll double check but I'd rather not try and get them via trains etc

Not sure Kelly. It could be either. I bought Velvet and Betsy when they were 8-10 weeks old. Next time I go to P@H I'll ask if they do a free health check for piggies from their adoption centre.

I didn't get a vet check with my two. They were sexed (as closely as possible because Blitzen was having none of it), given a general check over for signs of ringworm, and that was it. I believe it was mentioned that if they'd found any signs of ringworm or similar, they'd have their vet check the piggies over, but it was a while ago and there was nothing to find anyway.

Yes that's what I mean. I have never had the vet check. Pets at home do a health check which is just the member of staff dealing with you checking the sex, eyes, ears, front teeth etc. Doesn't help when two weeks after coming home you have 3/4 piggies infected with ringworm lol

yeah exactly lol, but tbh it's ringworm, there's a stress trigger to it too. I mean they did say if they started showing any signs for ringworm to bring them back and their vet would look at them, but I guess I got lucky?

Ah great well it's only round the corner so I'll let you know how it goes. I'll get the hutch built and everything next month I think.

Hey guys another quick question that might be relevant to other prospective new owners. How loud are guinea pigs, from the outside I mean. For example can you hear them outside of you're upstairs in another room? Thanks!

It all depends if you have the windows open! When shy little Meg Meg looking cute 3.webp starts wheeking for her veg dinner it sounds like she is being murdered. Cutey pie Dennis Dennis in Snuggly 4.webp isn't quite as loud. The other 3, Velvet, Betsy and Christian are all a bit quieter.

🥰 What sweet creatures! Thanks for the pictures. I am sure it'll be fine. The windows are double glazed anyway. Thanks 😀

Thanks.

Velvet, Betsy and Christian have just complained that they didn't get their 5 minutes of fame and won't shut up until they do. Here is Velvet (DA BOSS!:yikes:)Velvet in Hidey 2.webp Here is the Ever Beautiful Betsy Betsy in Red Snuggle Tube.webp and
here is Christian

I can only echo Betsy in that it depends on the piggy. My late Jemima could, on occasion, be heard from the other side of the house... With the windows closed! I'm sure she annoyed many of my neighbours at times :)) now my current 4 are a fair bit quieter

Is this in the day or at night? I know they kind of keep to your schedule bit I'm just checking!

@Tommywing5b7, backtracking to a previous comment, I believe Snugglesafes can double up as ice-packs in summer as well, but perhaps check the instructions first! :) Failing that, you can fill up an old plastic bottle with water, put it in the freezer overnight and wrap a towel around it.

Yes I think they do. I had a look at one in P@H. Should be all set I think.

I think it was in the morning after I woke up that I heard her but it was a few years ago now so can't be 100%. I'm a heavy sleeper so wouldn't know if she had been squeaking in the night.

I don't use snugglesafes as coolers at all but I have a lump of slate which helps take body heat away and also an ice pod which is still in my freezer despite not being needed for several months
