Emergency 7 month old guinea pig - pain and weight loss

I hope you get some news soon. It’s awful waiting for news. Sending healing vibes. ❤️
Thank you, they basically said if I hear nothing then assume she's either the same or improved, if I do hear something it's because they've had to change treatment or something has declined.

Ah so no news is good news maybe.. The night vet would have had a handover from the exotic vet, which could help if they're not exotic.

i hope the vet can get to the bottom of this.good to hear she is getting stronger pain relief.such a worry for you.your piggies will love having some home comforts.I'm thinking of you at this difficult time, but I'm sure that the vet will be able to sort it out.it sounds like your vet is very competent.
I really hope having some of her own stuff will help to make them both feel a little more at home ❤️. They're both quite nervy pigs too so I'm hoping they're not feeling too frightened. They've got a separate ward for small furries so it should be quiet for them. Thank you for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate yours and everyone else's messages. It's helping at a really nerve-wracking time ❤️

Just hope you and your piggie are okay, and relieved some news from the vet.xx
Hi, so the vets called this morning and said she wouldn't be coming home today as they weren't happy to release her just yet but they did say she was stable. She is still in pain in her abdomen which seems to be more to the right hand side and they're treating her with cotrimox as it's a suspected infection. Bloods still not back yet. Thisafternoon she has improved and she has been eating unaided but they're continuing to syringe feed her too. This morning her wee was still very orange but the vet said she thought this had improved a little by thisafternoon. Vet has recommended she stays there until these bloods are back so that they have a better idea re what we're dealing with, and so that I don't bring her home just to have to readmit her. I'm missing them so much now! X

Sorry you don't have your piggies and you don't have answers yet. Your vet sounds thorough, hope the meds work.

OK so just a brief update. My piggy is still an inpatient at the vets, although I am told she is doing very well and had it not been for waiting for results etc so we know the next plan of action, she could have come home. Her bloods came back yesterday and she has slightly elevated liver enzymes and also something to do with her kidneys, however these results are only slightly above the normal parameters so have been marked as clinically insignificant by the lab. Phosphate and potassium were also elevated but marked "artifact" by the lab which means they believe this is more to do with sample storage than anything else. Everything else came back normal so it's still a mystery but she has responded well to antibiotics since monday. Agreed with vet yesterday that xrays will be done today just to check for any bladder stones etc as it really is a bit of a mystery at the moment. I've spent the last 2 days hoping and at times thinking my piggies would be coming home so fingers crossed I can go and get them today ❤️

I dread to think of the vets bill at the end of this-we're currently at the £750 Mark I believe so hopefully I can claim this back on their insurance!

Really pleased to hear that she's well in herself now and no longer in all that pain 😊 Hope you have her home soon and hope insurance pay out, they should do if it's not a preexisting condition, there might be an excess. Sometimes we never find out what's wrong.

So glad your girl is doing much better, bet you’ll be chuffed to have her home! Lots of healing vibes and hugs to you all! x

Thanks, I just want them both home now! I'm starting to fret that when I do get them home any temp change or humidity change is going to stress them further but I need to stop! Just had a text from the inpatient nurse and she's had another good night, very bright and eating well, xrays have been done and reviewed today and they said to just wait for the vet to call with the results. I'm going to ask if I can come and collect them ❤️. Yes there's an excess, I'm just aware we've made quite a few claims and they've always been really great so I hope that continues to be the case!

Thanls for your reply, yes I can't wait to have them home and hopefully to have a better idea of why she's been so poorly ❤️

I'm pleased your piggie is improving.you will be so happy to have your piggies home.insurance company should help, maybe you could ring them so they will be aware a claim is likely. 🤗

OK so I've got them home and I really don't see very much change in Holly, I was told the orange wee had stopped and if anything it's worse than ever before, her poops are all over the place and she's tensing her abdomen 😭. I don't know what to do, she goes between looking OK to hunched with her fur on end and she's very bony. I'm worried I'm going to lose her and she's only 8 months old. Please see attached the pics of her wee from thisafternoon since I've had her home, it comes out of her this colour.

I just don't know what else I can do. Her bloods were more or less normal, xrays showed nothing, the vets are happy with her but how can this be normal?! She's never had wee like this before so there has to be a reason for it. What else can I do for her? She's on septrin, cisapride, emeprid, metacam.

How are things now?
Hi, so she's had all 4 meds this morning, when I went to them this morning she was up and about but there is bright orange wee everywhere. I double checked this late last night and it comes out highlighter pen fluorescent yellow then turns the orange within seconds. She's very tender in her abdomen, I've rebooked her in with an exotics vet on Wednesday next week as that's the soonest I can get her in. I'm hoping she's OK today- I've taken all week off work this week so I've had to work today and don't finish until late 😞. Any idea what bright yellow colour changing pee and a hard sore abdomen might mean?! She's definitely pooping, some normal some not. She's also a little bit bristly looking too which tells me she's uncomfortable.

What are the not so good poos like? Sorry I don't know but if you type orange wee into the search bar of this site, there are a few entries. Various foods and grass can turn wee bright orange it seems. Did the vet think she'd recovered from her operation? Is that a new vet she's seeing? That'll be good. Sorry you've still got a worry about her 😔

Thanks for your reply I really appreciate it. So the not so good poops are literally like mouse droppings, some of them joined together like a little string of sausages, the others inbetween are more or less normal perhaps a little thinner than usual. Yes I've been trawling the forums trying to find someone who's had a similar experience but I can't think of anything in her diet that's changed and the other pig is still peeing her usual clear to light yellow.... I'm frustrated too as I genuinely thiught she had improved but I've weighed her and she's lost 40g since she went into the vets on Monday even though I was told she'd gained..... So confused.

Aw poor girl. Another vet sounds a good idea. There's an entry on "sausage link poops" on here, it seems to say not to worry about less than 50g weight loss, might be relevant to you if you search for that maybe?

Thanks, I've just got in and she is sat really puffed up but chomping away on her hay and her pellets and drinking away quite merrily. I got a screech when I walked over too. Somethings going on but I don't know what...... Her bloods were normal, her stitches on both sides have healed beautifully and don't look painful. I'll have a look at sausage link poops thank you.

Maybe think about a 2nd opinion,I'm sorry she is still unwell.hair spiked usually suggests pain.my thoughts are with you.

So I've booked her in with an exotics vet at a different practice hut I think it is one of the vets who looked after her during the week at the hospital as they switch around the area. She's been seen over the course of this week by at least 3 different exotics vets, I've just been to see her this morning and she's all puffed up but is stuffing her face and there are some normal poops in the cage which I haven't seen in a long time. They're definitely hers as they're much longer than the other piggy. She may have some poop soup thisafternoon from the other one as its worth a try at this point right?!

Still peeing the rainbow, but she is up and about albeit obviously either in pain or feeling unwell. She finishes all her meds today.

Her vets appointment is weds at 9am, obviously if she deteriorates before then I'll take her back in but getting hold of an exotics vet for consult is a mission at the moment. She will then have to stay in the office with me all day thereafter so I'll be bringing her floor playpen and hoping they don't scream at me whilst I'm on video calls 😱

I’m so glad she’s tucking in and has a few good poos, hopefully you’ll see many more today! 🤞 Hope this appt can help to give you some answers. I’ve seen funny coloured urine before but it’s been when they’ve been on meds etc, really hope this new vet has some ideas.
Hope she carries on moving and munching all day for you today :hug:x
