Hello all! My guinea pig, Mellow, appears to have a crust around her eye. It is not flaky skin and it causes her to squint (probably because it is attached to her fur). She is eating and drinking, her activity levels are normal. I noticed it a couple nights ago and there was a tiny strand of blood which I believe was because she was scratching it. No blood tonight (live in the U.S. Pacific time) so that is a good thing. I have been giving her a saline solution to keep the eye clean and it seems to make her better. Any advice is appreciated thank you!

If she is producing discharge and it is itchy/painful causing her to scratch it, I would be getting her to the vet, especially as it has been going on for a couple of nights.

You may want to be careful with the saline solution as you do not want to remove any evidence of the issue, making it harder to diagnose at a vet.
It may be something simple and easy to treat but you can never tell without a hands on assessment from a vet.

Fingers crossed all goes well at the vet, your girl is gorgeous x

Hi

Please see a vet for a possible infection of the eye, the conjunctiva or respiratory tract that may require antibiotic eye drops or an oral antibiotic, depending on the cause. Just saline won't heal the problem, especially if it is one of the nastier bugs or if it is due to an eye injury (including something stuck under a lid. We cannot tell you what is exactly wrong.
