As many of you know about 6 months ago pepper had a awful uri which she was on antibiotics for from may to august. Had some sniffles in september, was fine in october, and then at the beginning of november she wheezed a tiny bit but seemed fine otherwise. Our hay ran out so we had to use the old one and have been using that since. It has been a month since then and she seems completely fine- squeaking for food, she’s put on weight, eating and drinking great. She sometimes has a little sniffle when she’s eating wet veg and she’ll sometimes do one singular cough- only when’s she eating veg. The only symptom still here is yellow discharge from her nose? It’s only ever one nostril and is runny. there’s also never very much. She’s had this over a month like i’ve said so surely if it was an infection she would’ve gotten worse. my other pig is absolutely fine and has no symptoms at all. with the last uri both pigs showed symptoms.
So could this be down to a sensitivity even though it’s yellow? it’s only really started since we changed back to the old hay.
no discharge from eyes either.
Does yellow discharge automatically mean infection?

Yellow discharge is normally an infection; sight unseen I can't comment. I have unfortunately no idea what is causing it (one sided sinusitis?) but if there is a tie with the hay you are feeding (pollen, dust sensitivity?), then I would try and see whether a hay change can make the difference.

PS: URI can be carried in reservoirs if it is not fully cured and can flare up again in later life. Ultimately a nasal swab and a lab test is the way forward as to whether you are dealing with a bacterial infection or not.

My boy J Rod had this. I’m not saying that your friend has what mine did but lungs were clear and sounded great but had yellow mucus coming out of his nose with crusts around the eyes, this also caused a slight head tilt. J Rod had a URI that somehow avoided the lung function and instead went for the sinus. Please consult the vet about the possibility that the URI has returned and if the vet thinks it has I would ask for a longer dose as URIs sometimes move fast. Actually my guineas eyes cleared up THEN he had yellow mucus coming from the nose so we switched antibiotics all together so maybe consider that if the vet thinks it’s a good idea. This is all being said with the idea that it’s returned of course, either way best of luck to you!

Pepper is now very puffed up and not really moving- this came on suddenly. she was fine at about 4pm. taking her to the vet tomorrow. please please can someone help me as to what to do?

I’m afraid no clue. Your best bet is your vet. Have you been weighing her daily? If she’s not eating you have to syringe feed. Weighing will tell you about that. What time is the appointment?

she’s lost 10g since yesterday. i’ve been trying to syringe feed. ringing first thing in the morning as the puffed up has only just come on. i’m petrified- i love pepper so much!

If she has puffed up her fur then it can indicate pain.
as we have 24 hours vets in the UK, you can get her seen at any time.

Forgot to give an update!
Pepper went to the vet on saturday morning. Vet checked her lungs and heart and both are completely fine. She said as she’s had it for a while and it’s not in her lungs it’s most likely a sensitivity. When Pepper was there she couldn’t hear a wheeze either.
She gave Pepper an injection to get her gut going and increase her appetite, and said Pepper may have been hunched up because she hurt herself or she could have mild arthritis. So pepper is on cat metacam 0.4ml once a day for 5 days. She isn’t in any pain at all anymore and is eating and moving fine. She still wheezes maybe once every other day- but as her lungs are clear and the vet can’t find any infection it’s likely to be allergies or past scaring triggered by the dust in the hay. I have a haybox order on its way and the guineas are bedded on newspaper. :)
