Hey there everyone.

On a yearly to biyearly basis, my family sprays for bugs and spiders, inside and out. This has happened in every house and apartment I've ever lived in, so I can expect this to be a recurring thing. I'm not sure if this is as much of a thing in other places? The spray usually disappears from human notice in a couple of hours absolute maximum, and we keep the dogs out of the way for about the same amount of time. We don't even usually leave the house while it's sprayed, just stay out of the way of whoever pulled the short stick. It isn't super strong smelling stuff except when it's first applied, and it isn't a super toxin either. It's mostly a deterrent for spiders, ants, ticks, etc., as nothing especially bad or toxic can be used with animals in the house.

When my pigs are here, what should I do about this? I know I'll have to move the pigs and any of their food for sure, but would it be advised to take apart and move the entire cage during spray time? How long do you think I'd to wait before it would be safe to move everything back in, if I have to move everything to another space? I can move them to another location entirely for a few days if that's necessary. Unfortunately, not spraying is not only not my call, but also it's really non optional. I've seen someone who skipped spraying end up with, no joke, hundreds of asian lady beetles breeding on their ceiling. It was a mess. Wolf spiders are also really common around here, among other various quarter sized terrors.

Any advice is appreciated!

I would remove the guinea pigs into maybe a spare room whilst its happening and after the fumes have calmed down move them back, because they need to be in an environment with clean air, away from toxic fumes. If you can't do that then the next best thing is to maybe cover them or try not to do it near them as much

Their cage could be wiped down thoroughly afterwards rather than dismantled, with anything soft, fleece etc, put in the wash.

Personally, I'd phone your vet for advice. They'll be familiar with this kind of spraying. Guinea pigs have sensitive respiratory systems and you don't want to risk affecting them.

It would set your mind at rest.

Thank you all for your replies!

@Posyrose I did call my vet! The nurse took down a note to ask the GP Vet when she got back, and I'm waiting on a phone call about it. Hopefully they'll get back to me soon.

@Black piggies I'll be sure to make sure I wash everything as well then, just to be careful. Would vinegar and water work for wiping it out, or should I use something stronger and wipe it down twice, once with something stronger and then vinegar water?

@Ellie-May I'll definitely move the guinea pigs away while they're spraying. If nothing else, they can definitely chill out in the shed out back until things have settled. If I need to remove them for a few days, I could always take them to my brother's house.

I think wiping down with any small animal friendly cleaner would be good. I have a very sensitive nose and find vinegar sets me off sneezing, so I wouldn't use it without rinsing off personally.
