Hi ive contacted the vet over my guinea pig scratching himself , the problem is the vets wont see any new patients during covid. She advised Xeno 50, which i has got. Going off body weight 1000g it say 4 pipettes, i don't want to overdose any advice welcomeIMG_3536.webp

Yes 4 pipettes of xeno 50 is the correct dose for a 1000g piggy but really a vet should be performing a hands on examination and diagnosing a definite issue rather than just prescribing an antiparasitic without diagnosing parasites :(

The treatment needs repeating every 2 weeks, until you have done 3 treatments altogether- if you have mites or lice.

Yes regarding the Vets i agree, but ive rang a few vets and none will see him (Covid) Do you give 4 pipettes in one go which is 60 drops , 15 per pipette.

Yes 4 pipettes in one go, dropped onto the skin on the back/neck.
Many vets prefer to prescribe xeno 450 rather than xeno 50 for piggies weighing close to a kilo as xeno 450 is much more concentrated so only 1 pipette or slightly less in needed per piggy. For xeno 50 you need multiple pipettes as it is more dilute.

If you update your location to give us a city or region perhaps someone can recommend a vet? Or have you seen our recommended vet locator links at the top of the health and illness forum page?
Certainly in the UK vets have been seeing pets for hands-on examinations throughout the pandemic, but often the owner must wait outside...

I think it’s a pretty poor show that the vets you’ve contacted have refused to see you. Covid or not, vets are seeing patients. Which vets are you registered with?

Please change your location to a town/county rather than postcode. You have to be careful what information you make available as it’s there for everyone to access. Have a look at the vet locator link below and see which one is nearest you that you can take piggy to. I would do that early Monday if possible and see if you can get them an appointment soon.

I'm not registered, although they have me on record from my cat about 5 years ago, but said it was to long ago

That may well be the problem, then. If your piggies were registered they would be obliged to see you. It is a good idea to register them with a vets as a matter of course. You never know when you will need to see a vet.

If he lives with a friend the other piggy should really be treated at the same time (or at least within a day or two) to prevent any mites or lice passing from one to the other. I've got 4 now so the last time was pricey to treat everyone when the new girl brought them in! We use the 450 as mine are fat chunkers but the 50 works fine as long as you use enough pipettes. It's not for rubbing into the fur like a shampoo... it works by applying onto the skin where it is absorbed and the things living in/on the skin are killed off. It doesn't kill the eggs which is why the repeat treatments are necessary - the eggs hatch out and the live ones are then killed next time round. I blitz out the cages a day or so after the treatment has been applied. I'm sorry you were unable to see a vet. Good luck!
