Hi,

The vet had suggested that my guinea pig may need an xray after suspected pneumonia but after being on baytril and metacam he began improving and the vet then said one wasn't necessary.

Before being given the all clear I had asked how much an x-ray was to which I was told "the vet will sort that out when the time comes".

This was at a Vets 4 Pets at Pets at Home in the UK - I was just wondering if anyone has had one out of this chain and how much this would be been? Fingers crossed I won't need one in future...

I think it's £150 to £200? I had one done on my girl but I think there were others charges too. I paid over £200 altogether.

Mine was at vets 4 pets but a stand alone one. Not based in a pet store.

Hi there! I'm from the US and I literally just took one of my pigs in for an x-ray over the weekend (suspected broken bone, but thankfully didn't find any). It cost $150 for the xray, and $40 for the sedation to take the xray - I know it's not the exact place/chain you were talking about - but just thought it might be helpful to get a ballpark figure. Good luck!

I was quoted £300 at my local Vets4Pets this was for several images and an anaesthetic. This was just to find out what was wrong with my Piggy. Needless to say I declined there kind offer and went up to piggy specialists in Northampton who diagnosed the problem in 20 mins! My vets are good but they aren't guinea pig specialists they just see a lot of guinea pigs. My piggy's problems are complex so not surprised they didn't spot them tbh.

I use one of the other Pets at home vet chains, Companion care, but it's similar. I was once told that it was £90 for the first and then about £40 for any subsequent ones. I've never had to pay over £100 for xrays though, although I'm lucky and seem to get a few quid knocked off here and there which I am unbelievably grateful for considering how often I'm there lol But yeah, you're probably looking around £150ish.

The vets4pets starts around £200 depending how many images they take. The vets are all franchised not part of pets at home as far as I know so prices will vary between branches. I've paid a lot more at my exotics vets though.

Vets4pets is a franchise and as such not all practices charge the same. Any of them should be able to give an estimate quote though

Thank you for all of the replies - I think I'll need to invest in some insurance just incase!

I'm in Belfast and don't know of any piggy specialists in Northern Ireland. I've been to a few vets with various other pigs and they all seem to know about the same amount! I was thinking V4P must be the best considering they sell guinea pigs in store but I was unaware they were not connected.

insurance usually won’t cover pre-existing conditions
As above, I have a separate vet fund account. For me, the account works out better than an insurance that may well have restrictions on what it will and won’t cover.
