Hi everyone.

One of our pigs had a large cyst removed two days ago and now has a wound along her side. She keeps scratching it open, we've tried various socks and bandages to cover it up but she manages to slip out of them all.

Anyone have any ideas for us. My husband is on his way back to the vets now for it to be glued back together for the third time!

Huge thanks in advance :)

Is she on a good dose of painkiller?
In my experience of surgeries, they tend to leave wounds alone if their pain is well managed. Its not recommended to cover surgery wounds really

Poor piggy. Hope she gets sorted and is soon on the mend.

Thanks for your reply. She is on 0.2ml of painkillers once a day and the vet has just prescribed antibiotics. They were reluctant to bandage it through fear of her claws getting caught in the bandage. They clipped her claws which I'm a tad annoyed about, they tend to be sharper just after a clip! I have spent all morning making a jumper for her which she slips right out of! I'm tempted to up her dose of pain relief to 0.25ml and see if that helps!

It would not be a good idea for a jumper anyway, its not safe for them to be ‘dressed’

Is that cat metacam?
Piggies can take their pain meds twice a day as they metabolise them within about 12 hours so once a day often isn’t enough. If she is chewing at the wound then its possible its due to discomfort and a slightly higher dose of pain meds/ meds being given twice a day may be needed. Only a vet can prescribe that though.

Such a nightmare

Thanks so much for your help, I'm going to call the vet again regarding increasing the pain relief, sounds like what you're saying makes a lot of sense! The pain relief she has is Loxicom (Meloxicam).

Yes do give them a call and check.
Loxicom/metacam is the same thing, just different manufacturing names but always the same active ingredient

Let us know how things go

Such a nightmare, she is a really nervous pig so all this extra handling is really stressing her out. I'm hoping the stress isn't encouraging her nibbling!

New question!

Vets are now closed. After a bit of research I'm thinking a dose of 0.25ml twice per day might work for her. We have the Cat Metocam and I believe the maximum dose is 0.5ml every 24hrs.

Any input would be appreciated :)

Hi!

You can give the prescribed dosage twice a day in the case of cat metacam.

I sincerely hope that the antibiotic is working. Repeated gnowing open of operation sites is usually a sign that the wound is not healing as it should and that it is uncomfortable/painful.

Unfortunately piggies are masters of wiggling out and collars also don't work for them. :(

Lot's of vibes for your piggy. One of mine had a large lump removed yesterday and so far hasn't touched her wound, but we were told to check her really regularly to make sure she hasn't opened it. She's on Cat/Guinea pig Metacam twice per day.
