Hi,
We adopted a baby (~6weeks)from a rescue yesterday to keep my old man who recently lost his brother company. They’re getting on very well thankfully, but baby came home with some scabs. They don’t seem to be swollen, he isn’t losing hair and they don’t seem to be itchy.

He must have knocked off the head of a scab on his face overnight because when I picked him up this morning his face had puss on it and the head of the scab that looked like it was healing well was missing. He’s very little so this is worrying me as it’s right on his cheek!

I rinsed it with saline but was just wondering what else I could use to make sure it doesn’t get infected. I have dermagel from a previous vet visit so i was wondering if this would be useful.

I will try and attach a photo but I'm on mobile and a little confused
Thank you!

Hi, poor baby!
For wounds on my piggies I use betadine..
It should keep it from getting Infected and help heal it
I don’t know if anyone else on here uses it but it seems to do the job for me..

We would recommend you keep it clean with saline but to also see a vet to have any wounds checked out. They may be bites from previous cage mates etc so you want to rule out infection.
Please don’t attempt to home treat anything (you can use saline to keep the wound clean).

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m sorry your new piggy is poorly. If there is puss then I’d think it’s already infected and a vet visit will be needed to get some antibiotics and pain relief. The sooner the better and cheaper. If you try to treat it yourself it could get much worse and cost more in the long run. Good luck.

Can’t wait to see pictures of your piggies.

Personally I would definitely get a vet check, especially as he's so young. Even if it's just for some pain relief.

Hi thank you for all the help so far! I’m trying to get a vets appointment arranged + will keep cleaning it with saline in the meantime. Here’s the little guy, apologies for the awkward angle, it was difficult to take a pic one-handed. I can’t tell if I'm overreacting about this!

🥰 he’s gorgeous. What’s his name?

You are definitely not overreacting. I’d be taking mine to the vets with that. Good luck. I hope you can get an appointment.

Gorgeous boy, what lovely eyes. That definitely needs looking at.

Spoken to the vet and they have no availability at all until Monday, very worrying. Is there anything else I can do in the meantime? He does not have a name yet so I’ve been referring to him as babykins as he’s so small compared to my older guy !

I reckon the best thing to do is to keep it clean and rinse it with Betadine until you get to the vet

I just looked up betadine and saw it’s an iodine derivative, I have medical grade iodine in the house would this be safe/a good idea to use? I also have hibiscrub if this would be helpful for anything ?

Please use saline to keep it clean until you see the vet
