ches and maisie love burrowing in their hay, but i was going to take it away and just give them their little beds and some blankets to go under.

it would only be for a few weeks and they would still have hay in their hay racks obv, but i just feel like it would be really mean of me because they love burrowing in it.

just need to cut costs down a bit for the next few weeks due to huge, continuous vets bills for my rabbits.

what do you think?

eta: they are inside

It would be a bit mean - can you compromise on cheap hay?

If not; it should be OK - they will get used to it. But you will have to be prepared to refill the hay rack more often, as they have been eating quite alot from their cuddle corner.

Hmmm one of the best things for me is to see how happy my piggie is when ive cleaned her cage and put lots of new hay in.

instead of using quite so much hay though, my mum bought some soft bedding suitable for all small animals and she loved making a bed in that and seemed to love pushing it around and snuggling down in it.

id be worried about the dampness from the blankets absorbing the pee and the germs and bacteria that could be present from the festering damp, theyd have to be washed every day i imagine, or at least every couple of days

they are on profleece and i change all the cage bedding everyday anyway.

i get the 10 bale of hay from dustfreehay as my rabbits have to have this. so the pigs get it too and it works out at £4 a bale that way.

hmmm.... probably just carry on with this as i would still have to get the 5 bale for the rabbits anyway, so the piggies would have to have hay that will last the same amount of time for under a tenner to make what i spend any cheaper.

probably isn't worth stopping it for the sake of a few quid.

thanks. :)

Have you got a market or farm shop nearby, where you could ask for cheap veg and veg offcuts to save some money?

no, no farm shops near and i don't drive either so order everything online. don't think i could take their hay away from them!

would be cheaper if the rabbits could have any hay but they have to have the dust free hay.

I use fleece and my piggies only get hay in racks. It does them no harm what so ever as long as they are refilled before they run out. I have two pigs per cage and they get 2/3 hay racks a day per cage depending on how much they eat! you could always treat them once / twice a week to a paper bag stuffed with hay for a bit of excitement or a toilet roll tube!

i never took their hay away in the end! couldn't do it! :))

awwwwwwwwwww
You could always cut down boxes so they can sit under them as little hidies :)
I used to drape towels over boxes for Dukey........he then used to love to grab a corner of the towel and pull it under himself to snuggle down x) it was so sweet x)

they have a blanket over a roof part i made and the hay is under that. when i upgrade their cage (hopefully soon!) i will beable to put the hay in litter trays in one area and lots of little snuggly beds in the other! so they will beable to have both! :)

aww, they eat out of the hay racks aswell but they love burrowing. maisie wouldn't be too fussed i don't think. but chesney adores burrowing. i think when they have the option of beds and hay he will choose the hay still! they have those little piggy beds now but he doesn't use them much. maisie likes them though. x)
