My guinea-pigs have woodshavings as a bedding and I know it's not a good bedding. My 3 guinea-pigs all have quite red feet, and the bedding is changed 1-2 times a week and I don't let it get really unclean before I clean them out. I tried putting sudocrem on their feet but it didn't get any better so I think it might be the woodshavings causing this. I'm thinking of changing to megazorb, do you think it will be better for their feet?

I use woodshavings and it's not that bad if you put a lot of hay on top of it. You could try Megazorb but it's really expensive :)

How about switching to fleece? I use it and it is lovely and soft. I would not use shavings as they can cause allergies with guinea pigs. x

I think you could make it softer by putting some soft hay on top or megazorb is soft but very dusty in my opinion and made my guinea pigs sneeze and itch constantly. I've now got them on fleece and they happily run around, hardly ever sneeze and it's much cleane in my opinion than conventional bedding, partly due to the fact I clean it every 2 days and also it's very soft!

I did try fleece and vetbed but I found that it got wet very quickly and I had to change it once, sometimes even twice a day, which although I could do whilst I'm on summer holidays, I won't be able to do that when I go back to college in September because I'm out from early in the morning to quite late in the evening.
At the moment I put woodshavings in and lots of hay for pets meadow hay on top of it but it doesn't seem to have helped their feet much. I don't know if their feet is causing them much pain because they don't mind me touching the bottom of their feet but it is very red and looks like its sore. They used to live with another guinea-pig called Sasha, who had black feet and the woodshavings never made her feet sore, but I don't know if that's just because her feet were dark I couldn't really see if they were sore or not. Thank you for the replies :)

I use Megazorb for my piggies. I've never found it much more expensive than shavings! I get it from a local saddlery for £8.60 per bag. That usually does me one 5ft hutch and four indoor ferplast cages with a bit left over.

I'm very pro megazorb over here *waves* I used to use shavings and I had to go back to them the other week as my mum went out gallivanting with the megazorb in her boot rolleyes it was a nightmare, I'd forgotten that the shavings go everywhere. With the megazorb I have my little dustpan and I just scoop out the megazorb into a bin liner.

It stays cleaner much longer than shavings. I only have two boys and a sack of megazorb lasts me around 3-31/2 months and works out cheaper than wood shavings as I don't have to constantly clean the cage I buy it a sack at a time for £7.49.

In terms of being friendly for their feet my boys don't have red feet or any skin problems. I don't put anything on top of the megazorb when I clean their cage but they always get a huge pile of hay in one corner and as you can imagine it travels round the cage.
